Recently I got a nasty virus and had to reinstall Windows and all of my software. I installed PSP X2 from the CD that I purchased, and was once again in a trial period. Meantime, I've been looking for my activation code. Well, thirty days have passed and the only code I can find doesn't work. So I tried calling Corel support during their advertised business hours. No answer. I tried again a few days later. No answer. So yesterday I e-mailed them. Well it seems that since I didn't purchase the product directly from Corel, that I don't qualify for free e-mail support.

I have a few options the way I see it: Tear the house apart looking for another activation code that I may have overlooked. Argue with "Jen" from Corel Support insisting that I don't need support, but an activation code for a product that I purchased, registered and rightfully own. Visit one of those dubious websites with lots of numbers in the URL and cheeky babes that pop up, and download a crack. Or wash my hands of the piece of crap and go to PIMP or Lighthouse or some other cheap or free software.

No. This isn't frustrating at all.

I feel for you, bvy. Last time I bought software I took every piece of information I could find and typed it into a document for safekeeping, and I swear when I called support I was still somehow missing an essential number. It's maddening.

Sometimes I even photograph the label with my trusty P&S, and file that shot with the documents for the item, just in case there is a number on the label like that.

I write the key code on the disk with a sharpie. I also put stickers on all my power bricks and chargers so they can be reunited with their devices after they inevitably get separated.

Here is something you might consider.

A while back I downloaded a program called Belarc Advisor which can be found Here

When you run the program it will list everything on your system, including the activation codes for the programs you have downloaded... or at least it did for me.

Good luck to you,

Ray

Great idea. I have a drawer full of chargers and have no idea which devices they belong to.

Yeah, it's a great program, but... If he had to "reinstall windows and all of my software" then that info probably is no longer available for Belarc to find...

Acquiring a large bin full of anonymous power bricks was what encouraged me to start marking them. I've been doing it for about 6 years now and it has reunited a number of items. Lifehacker actually posted that tip when I submitted it a few days ago. (Yes, I know the photo sucks, but hey, I wasn't entering a challenge with it.)

Thanks everyone. Certainly some good advice and things to explore here.

Regarding Belarc Advisor, if it looks at the file system, it might find something, as I reinstalled over my existing Windows installation. But if it looks at the registry (my guess), then it's gone.

Meantime, I'm playing around with GIMP, and quite loving it...
