Heh, from twitter:

@dELYSEious: Chicagoans on snow: 14"? Better leave a few minutes early for work. Chicagoans on quake: It woke me up! WE ALMOST ALL DIED!

Well Old Momma Nature didn't want us to get on an airplane. We moved our 8 PM today flight to tomorrow at 6:40 AM. Well that just got canceled and we are now scheduled for Sunday!
The views out the window are SO SO SO beautiful. Of course, we're not going back out into it for a little while. We did our shovel out #1 at about 9 AM. Right now it is a total blizzard.

There was an earthquake in Chicago??
02/10/2010 04:19:16 PM · #2404
Not so as any Californians would have noticed.

I am stuck inside (unless I want to enter into a blizzard and shovel) so I spent some time playing. And now I'm going to bore you all (or ya'all as my son would say):

Genie - That second one is lovely. The others are nice too; but the second one really does it for me. :-)

You forgot to mention the other 6 you just received. You're so on a roll, recently!

btw, beating me significantly in both of those challenge!

Thanks Wendy! And I continue to credit Ryan Magnumphotography for playing a very large part in this sudden surge of sixes (try saying THAT three times fast!) Were it not for him, would I have even thought to go shoot boarders and skiiers at a snowpark? Would I have ever shot Canon? Uhmm, probably not. And he pushes me, in the best way possible, by giving feedback on my shots (as I do his) and when I'm floundering with the D90, isn't afraid to tell me to 'Read the manual!'

And yeah, it helps that I now have more camera to play with (and a million more sub-menus to learn) but the camera and lens are just tools. Just more precise tools now :-)

All very good, and I'm sure having a positive influence is a good thing, BUT.....

You have worked your tail off for a while, and have put in the time, the anguish, the work, the grief, and all of the other parts of a natural growth process that has helped you to hit your stride.

Take some credit yourself, you silly goose!.....8>)

Lorie,
That is my favorite "go to" place for photography. It is the D&R canal. And I absolutely love wandering around in the area. Just about 50 feet to the west is the Delaware River.
Thanks, I'm glad you like my spot too.

VERY nice, Susan! And I think that your Herculean efforts at commenting for the Critique Club may have played a part as well. I certainly learn a lot by reading what you've written for Critique Club entries. So know that the recipients of those comments aren't the only ones who benefit!

*Eyes widening in alarm* OMG other people than those for whom I've written the critiques, read them too? Never would've thunk such a thing possible!

I think it's important to remember that Team Suck was founded on the basis that we just don't necessarily cater to the front page, yet we are a force to be reckoned with as photographers.

Take this entry for example.....

    4.9553

I am *so* happy with the way this image came out! It's natural light, it doesn't get much sharper than this, I love the angle, the exposure is spot on, yet the Interpretation Police don't see a mannequin as meeting "The Spirit of the Challenge".

Yet I thought this was a pretty cute, left-handed "piece" of a human, and a damn fine form at that!

Plus I've actually gotten to the point that if I think one of my entries makes someone tweak, more's the better! LOL!!!

So yeah......we don't suck, but we don't give a damn what you think if we like an entry.

If you go down through the ranks and look at profiles, you'll see a lot of ribbon winners, and quite a few with multiple ribbons.....but I flat guarantee that there is no other group of DPCers that can come up with six off the wall images from their port in a heartbeat the way any of us can! LOL!!!

Congrats General!!!!!!!! I first heard about the Jones Soda Photo thing from a facebook friend who submitted an image a while back.
YOU DID A FINE JOB!!!!! :-)

Good work Paul! I love Jones' Cream soda, can I get a case? ;-)

That is so incredibly cool!! Huge congrats and how exciting!

You can order it directly from them for about $30/case (1/2 case?) + shipping ... :-(

I was hoping you (or someone) would find it in a store and send me a bottle or two (if I can't find it myself) ...

FWIW this photo got an Honorable Mention a few years ago, but didn't make the labels -- maybe I should re-submit in B&W ...

Hey NJ,

I wish photog's comments were always this detailed. I see that you size/scale in the earlier stages of the game, which makes sense but I never really thought about (or did that way) before. Especially considering that you'll probably be doing an unsharp mask or two along the way. Anyhoo, I see in your details that you use Topaz (and have seen from other users as well).

What, exactly, is Topaz for. I ask because I'm pretty much stuck with open source software for the moment. I use Gimp for all my PhotoShop needs, UFRaw or Raw Therapee for getting the images to Gimp from my camera (sort of Light Room equivalencies I think).

I'm guessing Topaz is some type of program or plugin for PS that does some kind of tone mapping??
