I was sitting here fretting over my score in the perspective challenge (like many of us i had high hopes for my entry, thinking perhaps i could snag my first ribbon) and i stopped to think about it for a minute and asked myself, why am i so bent on getting a ribbon anyway? certainly we all appreciate the accolades of our peers. there is a big difference between your family thinking you are the next ansel adams and the compliments of the community here. it just kinda made me stop and think about my motives. is it just to get on the home page or is it to become a better photographer, because obviously one does not neccisarily validate the other.....not really sure why i posted this, i am open to thoughts, guess i was just waxing philisophical but at least now i feel better about my shot after getting this off my chest. |

I look at other factors than the average to determine if an entry was a success. I look at the voting breakdown, commenters average vote, and the actual comments to decide if my entry found it's fans or if just got a decent score because it didn't really suck. This recent entry from skewsme is a perfect example of a low averaging success.
Lots of people liked it, comments were very positive, but being an blurry abstract, there were also a lot of haters that canceled out all the positive votes. A "love it or hate it" entry.
All that being said, it's still a rush to get an entry with broad appeal, but it's certainly not everything. |

A question that I'm sure has been pondered ever since D&L started this site on their cave walls (okay it might not be THAT old but I'm sure the question is).
I think you hit on it with the need to feel appreciated by our peers and not just our family. There is nothing like knowing that all your hard work has finally paid off (well I'm assuming that since I haven't submitted anything in forever and never ribboned) and you now one of the ribbon holders. I have felt it a little whenever I sell any my images, it's a great feeling.
Enjoy it, I think the anticipation gives your heart a boost and kind of kick starts your energy levels.

Thanks for the post. I am often amazed at the power of a score to change my mind on a shot â€Â¦ sometimes I love the shot and the score is low - I have to ask myself " what am I missing? â€Â¦ I guess I don't like it THAT much =)" â€Â¦ and sometimes the opposite is true.
A ribbon is like a vacation â€Â¦ you look forward to it for a long time, it's almost as good as you imagined (if you're lucky), and you're pretty much the same a week or 2 later.
Having blabbed all that, I have to say, when looking back at my images, I can know that high-scoring images will work as portfolio pieces because they generally have mass appeal. So that's ONE reason to get a ribbon.

Winning is not all it's cracked up to be. When I won one, all my friends and family were calling me asking to borrow money - even people I have not heard from for many years. I ended up spending a huge chunk of the money on a Ferrari, which I promptly totaled and that put me in the hospital for 6 months and burned through the rest of the money on medical bills. I lost the house and my wife took the kids and left me. Now I am sitting in the public library sipping wine from a paper bag as I post this.
...wait, this isn't LotteryWinnersAnonymous.org, is it? |

Yes it is. Shame about the Ferarri. The rest of us blew our winnings on really expensive cameras so that we could take better photos. Somebody lied. |

OK, seriously........going back to the original post........
There are so many images that score so well here, that would never go on my wall, and a number of underated imaged that appealled to me and I could tomorrow put in a frame on the blank wall behind me..........
Many of our opinions are based on personal experience and opinion........I do always ask, do you want mass appeal (thus high score) or minority adulation. And even ask some of the guys who do this as a living, do you want an image that everyone likes (thus high score), or an image that appeals to a small group of people that MUST buy it (thus sells........) What you will love, I may hate.......I personally are after making people think, either loving or hating what I am putting forward.......

To me a "great" voting result would be to have an inverted bell curve, with a lot of ones, two, nines, and tens, and few of the numbers in betweeen; that would be a photo with impact ... |

One of my greatest personal achievements is this image.....
First....I *love* this image. It's just my kinda thing, and I just loved the wildness of the weeds & trees growing over it, the textures, the dilapidated state.....
I entered this along with two others in my local camera club competition. The other two got first & second respectively, and the first was by a resounding margin. This image did not place, didn't end up mid-pack, it finished DEAD LAST! When it came to the critique part after the judging, the one judge, who trashed it in the voting, proceeded to tell me in painful detail why he HATED it. After everything was over, no less than six people came up to me, and expressed their horror at the way the judge eviscerated my entry and how much they *really* liked the image.
Thanks to DPC having taught me how to receive both scores & commentary, and having come to the point where I don't enter anything I'm not completely happy with, I actually found the judge's views interesting because he was at least analytic in his reasoning for what he rated my image. Though it was subjective, he supported his case well. I was grateful for his explanation, and pleased that I was able to take his critique thoughtfully.
Point is......I was delighted to have such really strong feelings expresssed out loud to me, diametrically opposed, with one image. I felt that I had truly arrived to be able to evoke such strong emotion at polar opposites.
