My name is Ann O'Hair. I am a photography student at Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton, Ohio. Stivers is an urban public arts high school and part of the Dayton Public Schools system. More information on Stivers School for the arts can be found at www.Stivers.org/photo.
I am writing in hopes to solicit a donation of a piece of your photography for our annual fundraiser. The photography department has, for the last ten years, held a silent auction to raise money for the department. The auction consists of student work and donated work from professional photographers. All the proceeds raised through the auction go directly to the photography department and are used to buy cameras for the students, darkroom equipment, and general photography supplies which keep our program running each year.
The auction is set for April 9, 2010. We will gadly accept any donation and will mat and frame any unframed work. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me any time. If you wish to contact my teacher, his email is below. Thank you very much for your time.
Sincerely,
Ann O'hair

A quick google shows it seems to be on the up and up, and sounds like one school we have here in St. George. But, if it is similar in all respects, the auditions have more to do with mommy and daddyâs pocketbook than with budding talent (or so I hear), so much for public school.. |

I did a google search as well and figured it was on the up and up, I would feel alot better about it had this person not just registered on DPC today. If it was an established member or even registered user I would probably consider helping out. But I think under these circumstances I will be passing on this offer. |

I'm sympathetic to people in need. But, on the front range of the Rockies, we have many panhandlers who may or may not be telling the truth, in exchange for a few dollars of charity. On the streets of Boulder, it's common to see 30 year old, un-kempt men boasting service in Viet Nam, wearing camouflage fatiques, claiming PTSS, asking for handouts. It's a sign of our times. Just wait for this summer, when the economic collapse causes social chaos.
I opted to delete the "spam" message from Ms. O'hair. I'll search for verified people-of-need, to whom I can offer help. |

L2 just moved this thread to the General Discussion section, as there was a duplicate thread started there (Other Thread).
I plan on calling the school on Monday to confirm all of the information (I live in Dayton). I am pretty sure this is legit. Stivers is part of the Dayton Public School (DPS) system but several parents in other school districts are willing to pay tuition to send their children there. Overall, DPS is not a very well off school system and I'm sure that this auction helps provide equipment for poor, gifted, art students who would not be able to develop their talents on their own.

I got it too and don't see any harm in it. She's only asking for a print, no money. :) It would be nice to help out some artistic kids.
Tim, it's nice of you to check it out. :) |

I guess it is how far ahead you look. If you give them a print quality shot, Then they print one copy and sell it to someone who has a nice scanner and printer. They can then make as many copies as they wish and start selling them. Anyway, As long as I know they are asking everyone. I don't feel all that special anymore. lol

I didn't get the email....I guess they couldn't use a "Backyard Lizard" pic !
Also...don't you read the papers and watch network news? The economic collapse is over. We are moving in the right direction....all is well.

Hey I got one too. So is this a scam to get high res files to sell on or simply a good cause trying to using the DPC community. I can't decide? |

This is Ann O'Hair.
I'm sorry that I misspelled my name on my DPC account and I didn't realize until I read it in a comment.
But I AM a photography student from Stivers School for the Arts.
If you have any questions about our fundraiser, you can contact my teacher Robert Giesler (robertgiesler@hotmail.com) or me (ann.ohair@yahoo.com).
I am just trying to ask around and see if people would like to donate a print to my school.
Thank you for your time.
-Ann

It would help with credibility if you and/or your teacher used an e-mail account from the school... a little googling let me figure out that Mr. Giesler does seem to be on staff at Stivers. Folks are naturally a little skittish, though, when someone new immediately asks for donations. |

I just talked with the photo instructor (Robert Giesler) and the auction is their primary fund raiser for equipment for the kids. If you decide that you want to donate an image, here are a few guidelines.
1) Most of the images donated tend to be landscapes. He would really like to expand their auction portfolio with more cutting edge/artistic styles.
2) He prefers prints over high resolution files.
3) He would be happy to pick an image from low res. files if you want to email them to him.
4) You can mail the images to the following address,
Stivers School for the Arts
Attn: Robert Giesler/Ann O'Hair
1313 East Fifth Street
Dayton, OH 45402
Thanks for your consideration.

Sent a few images to Giesler and these are the ones I'll be donating. Not sure if that provides any information about what he is looking for but it looks like he is open to most anything.

Yes it is for real and they will make custom mattes and frames if your image isn't a standard size. I'm going to provide my own mattes but let them do the framing.
