I have a D300 and a Sigma Bigma. I've been shooting wildlife using it on my carbon fiber tripod with a ball head. I have the quick release plate on the bottom of the mount thing or tripod collar or whatever its called, its the one that came with the lens, but the mount keep slipping off the lens when I swivel the camera around on the ballhead. I don't really know what to do about it, I like how the camera & lens is connected to the tripod via that collar instead of through the underside of the camrera, but its shaky, unsturdy and slips off too much. Is there a better mount/collar made? or what should I do... thanks

| You do have the tripod collar positioned correctly, yes? If you align it a certain way the collar is made to slide off the lens. |

How does it mount to the ballhead? Sounds like your QR plate isn't designed very well. Are you saying your collar rotates on the plate, or the collar rotates on the lens? What QR plate are you currently using?
I use an arca-swiss style plate made by Acratech, and have had zero problems.
I believe this is what I have. |

Is the collar tightened on the lens?
The collar I have allows me to loosen it so I can spin the camera to vertical or whatever position I want. Once I have it positioned for the shot I re-tighten the collar. |

ok.. it has nothing to do with the QR.
Where the ring tightens around the lens, it comes lose.. I can show you better than tell you since i don't know all the proper terms ;)
The Ring/Collar/Mount thingy-ma-jig
Proper Set up, Ring tight
Ring lose, Camera moves
Ring lose, Camera moves

| You're not lined up right. Those silver nubs should be covered by the tripod collar. |

The collar won't go over the screws... let me take off the tripod, take it all apart and try again. hmmm :/ thx |

The collar will slide over the screws only when the screws are lined up with the slots in the collar. Once the collar is in place, you should be able to tighten the clamp screw so that no movement is possible... or loosen it slightly to allow the lens/camera to be rotated. |

THANK YOU!! I can not believe I have owned this lens a year and did not see the slots in the collar to make it go over those screws. LOL
Now... onto some stable maneuvering and shooting :) Thank you so much everyone! |

I agree with everybody regarding what the issue was, however, due to the weight of that lens/body setup, I would consider getting a new QR that locks more effectively. Your QR plate does not have a "boot" that locks it into the plate, and thus the only thing keeping it from rotating appears to be the tightness of the screw, which is going to encourage over-tightening.
I can only imagine how frustrating it was to use that setup with the collar the way it was. |
