I have 2 external hard drives and I'm setting up my new office. I want to make the connecting of the external hard drives easy & permanent. at the moment it involves getting them out of a draw & conecting all the cables etc.. a mess.
My question is because I don't want them to be active all the time should I leave the USB connected but put in a 240V switch to turn them off. Or a switch to disconnect the usb cable. Can a virus, voltage spike, etc make it in to an external hard drive that doesn't have the power attached?
How do you guys handle them?
Steven

| I have two external hard drives and they are just connected all the time. One has it's own power supply which I run off the same surge suppressor as the computer, the other one runs directly off the computer USB connection. |

Disconnecting the power would seem better and more convenient to me. It is possible that a surge of some kind could still make it to a turned off drive that still has wiring connected, but I think that risk is very minimal. Malware cannot get to a device that is powered off. I lave my external drive connected all the time and it powers down on it's own when not in use.
One thing you may want to look at if you only occasionally use the drives is a desktop hard drive dock. This is a USB or ESATA connected dock that you drop a SATA hard drive into.

If you want to be on the safe side for that, buy a triple extension with surge protection, those things have a built in power switch. This way you'll be protected against power surges, and you can shut off at will.
