Hey, I buy lots of used gear and want everyones suggestions on how to test them on the spot...

on a side note, I bought a nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR direct from nikon and want to know the best way to test it's sharpness, as it is under warranty...

I suspect it is soft at f/2.8 and f/22 .... how can I test this properly?

thanks!

these are 2 options. ( 1) tape a news paper to a wall set camera and lens on tripod and go through the f stops taking a photo on each . this should give you agood idea of the quality of the lens.
( 2) take the lens to a camera repairer they have a machini which will callibrate the lens to manufacturers settings. Phototronics here do this for my sony/minolta lens when they clean them. If lens is used I would strongly advise you to have it cleaned and reset cost is about $60/80NZ$.

Maybe this Nikon lens is prone to sofness. do the newspaper check on fstop and through the shooting range view the results and you can quickly find how and if the softness occurs

Keep in mind that at f/22 you *will* get softer results, not because of the lens, but because of diffraction, which affects all lenses.

hmmmm yea, well even my super sharp 55mm macro lens is soft as hell at f/32...

I'll have to do some newspaper tests wide open...

thanks!
