I think the recent explanation on his voting by Zeuszen with his 3. something average dispels the notion that low voters are all trolls. I'd much rather a well considered 2 off Zeuszen that a 5 off someone who has whizzed through looking at the images for 3 seconds each.

I am pretty new to this site, (within the last few months at least) but I have noticed that there are a lot of people that vote real low with no explanation whatsover. The draw to this site was to learn what I was doing wrong to improve my pictures but all I get is low scores that say my pics suck with maybe one or two comments. Seems to me that this site is just a bunch of mean spirited voters as well.

Question--whats this?

And why bother if the bag comes off after the Challenge is over?

That is the unknown comic.....oh, wait......

That is the hidden commentor. This option is available to paid members for commenting during voting as there are those that will actually PM someone about their comments while voting is still in play. This prevents that instance.

Some people actually plead their case on their photo or just complain about a comment if it's not to their liking! It helps keep the shots annonymous during voting.

Also sometimes referred to as a "baghead." It took me forever to figure that one out!

It' s NOT that complicated...If your image is in top ten, it was one of the best in a challenges...
Whining about imaginary Troll will not change your image once the voting has started.
In general your image will end where it should.
I'm sure some people try to play games, and down vote what they see as "competition", but for every one there is second one that will return a favor...

Give me one's all you like, but let me know why!!

Now, what bothers me is a couple posts I read about people that received "Hate Mail" after they left a comment ( I assume it was about image and not " you are an Idiot" kind of comment)
If you ever get a "Hate Mail" about your comment, post it, let everyone know, don't keep it just for yourself

Wrong approach, sorry. We're not supposed to be calling people out in the forums. If you get such a mail, copy it to the SC via the "Contact Us" link under "Help" in the menu, and they will take care of it.

You think that buyers of art are super photographers too? Do you have to be able to paint to appreciate and rate a painting in a museum? Auction halls are full of people who cannot paint, yet they have great taste and know what is crap.

It is so damn arrogant to think that only a fellow photographer can rate your photo well.

What if you have your studio and a client tells you that you did a lousy job on the photos of him. Are you going to dismiss his opinion because he isn't a photographer.

Why do people go to museums? To learn to be a better painter? No to feast their eyes and brains. Tickle their senses. By all means, they are the best people to judge your work.

Why don't we give a 3 month voting ban to anyone whose average vote given reaches as low as 4.5?(or make choose a number that we can agree on to be the troll's constant) I think that would take the blame off of the new, registered users still have a chance to learn and participate, which I thought was one of the main aspects of DPC. I would also suggest that this rule be applied to members as well.

Oowwww, help. My average on the fruit challenge is 4.3

No 10's. That quality just ain't there.
One 9. The photo that I think is the best. Normally it could be a 10. One 10. And normal would be one 9.
One 8. The number 2, but not as good as the 9. Normally there could be 3-6 photos there.
Five 7's. Excellent photos but not as good as the 8 and 9.
Eleven 6's. Above average or below average but creative.
Thirtytwo 5's. Average, lacking creativity, lacking skill, clear faults.
Sixtysix 4's. Uncreative, technically very imperfect, boring. Seen it a million times.
Twentyone 3's. Uncreative, imperfect, snapshots, shoehorned, very bad.
Two 2's. Crap, garbage, waste of time, pg didn't think or was drunk when uploading.
One 1. Absolute crap. Waste of time.

Is that trolling?

Maybe, but not ALL of us are troll voters. :P

I'm new here and have only voted in two challenges and I probably voted higher than the average voter. The vast majority of the photos were so much better than anything I can do that I had a hard time giving any of them below a five. Is that trollish and do I need to try to be more harsh in my critiques?

Thats an average for one challenge.. not your overall average, which I was refering to.

No you do it fine.
Vote like you want.
Over time you have more reference and then you might possibly be more critical. Or more positive. It is all good.

The main thing the site demands is that you vote consistently. Everyone will necessarily have their own interpretation of what constitutes a "good" or a "bad" photo, which is why the site has never issued specific voting guidelines, but as long as you consistently apply the same standard to all the photos on which you vote you should be fine.

You may, but are not required, to use all the available numbers in the scale; if you think every photo is good enough to receive a vote of at least 4/10 or 5/10, then those are the votes you should give.

Thanks guys. I was consistant. I was just afraid I was cosistantly voting too high. *insert appropriate joke here*
I I'll keep doing what I'm doing then.

Wow, 6 (or maybe 7, depending on your definition) threads currently on the front page about voting. That may be a record.
