for instance....
a) photojournalism of the human condition (or global warming or government or wealthy or poor, or .... etc.)

I don't really follow. You mean "human condition" as a result of factors such as you've listed? Sorry if I don't quite get what you mean.

no, I mean human condition or one of the others listed...
The world press photo site had a workshop which gave me the idea.
They did photojournalism with the topic "enough", so I thought it would be fun to mimic something like that here.

I've always wondered why the "human condition" type shots all seem to capture poverty, illness, or the hurting of our society? Isn't a happy family, perhaps at a wedding or a celebration, also part of the "human condition?"

Maybe becouse shocking and heartbreaking stuff sell better. Turn on the news channel and go wonder why you don't see anything ordinary there. That's journalism these days I guess.

I don't really have anything against those types of photos. I guess I just hate to see a topic that is so general become boxed in to one interpretation.
Journalism certainly does seem to dwell more on the negative aspects of our world, but I have seen some wonderful things done to document the positives as well.
Those sad photos can elicit a stong emotional reaction, but so can photos of babies being born, weddings (as mentioned before), even a harried mom - when the photos are taken with skill. And I believe they are all part of the "human condition." Ah well, just my two cents worth. :)

But back to your suggestion....how about - Black and white, landscape?
or maybe - Abstract, water? I don't think we'd want to get overly specific though.

To get away from specific examples, are you saying have a challenge that combines a technique or style with a specific topic or subject?
Not a bad idea, I like it. It might be an interesting thing to do for a more extended challenge - 2 weeks or month long. Like Judy pointed out, being too specific might be an issue, and could limit the opportunities in a 1 week timeframe, especially with a style like photojournalism. On the other hand, a topic like "enough" is open enough for interpretation that it might not be so difficult. So maybe just a matter of matching up the right pair... |

| Yes, I think human conditions will be a great challenge. Folks can capture many life styles indeed. They can be happy or sad. But one rule, no stageing. Real people with real issues and real celebrations captured. |
