I think in challenges the SC should enter 'ringers' in challenges.. I would bet a large number of what are considered masterpieces would get a slating.. |

I think allowances are made for the difference between a news grab shot and a studio table top.

I think its important to note that the winning image ostensibly wasn't taken for art or for advertising. It was a journalistic endeavor to tell a story and while I find it "busy" in my artistic vernacular (oxymoron?), it does tell a story of war, children, the emotions of someone who is "on the other side" whether by ideology or simple physical barrier as with the barb wire. Its not an inspiring photo but it does have a depth that allows the reader to connect (for anyone who has had to comfort a scared, tired, depressed child). Who knows the what was going on for that shot but at least you can see an adult with a child and you're separated by security wire.
I don't like the photo but then again, I wasn't surfing the 'Net looking for photojournalistic works when I ran into DPC. Much less on here to stir the political and social ire. I just tend to like the artistic attempts made here.

Am I wrong in thinking the competition was just for journalism shots?
Edit: Corrected spelling.

In addition to all the news categories, they also have category portraits, nature, arts and entertainment. Have a look at Winners 2004 in the menu on the left.

The human condition in every form, place, event, walk of life.
A striking photograph. Bravo to the photographer for putting him/herself in precarious situations to show the world what is going on.
