I received my G5 almost three weeks ago, and have a few problems which I'd appreciate some feedback on. Are these real problems that call for returning for an exchange, or are they common issues with G5s that just need to be dealt with?
1 - The LCD flickers, especially in sunlight. Having an A40 and having spent a lot of time in an A-series related forum, I know this issue was big with the A70, at least when it first came out. But is this a common occurance with G5s? I always thought that it might have to do with the A70 putting too much demand on it's power supply (4 AA batteries), but I wouldn't have expected that from the G5 with a proprietary battery.
2 - Higher noise than I expected, even at ISO50. I thought with the larger CCD, and based on at least some of the reviews I read, that the noise would be at least somewhat better than my A40. I haven't done a truely objective side-by-side test, but my "impression" is that the noise is about the same on this G5 as on my A40. I'll post some examples if anyone wants to compare with theirs for me. But is this a common trait of the G5? Or is it possibly a sub-par or faulty CCD, more seriously illustrated by...
3 - I've had two pictures which have a lined pattern in the top right corner of the shot. (Two that I've noticed - I haven't gone through all the pictures I took prior to the first one I found.) Its difficult to describe, so here are a couple of cropped portions of the two shots (at 100% resolution):
The first one wasn't really obvious at first. Since the picture in question wasn't a keeper, I probably would have missed it except that it got exagerated when I switch from "Best Fit" to "Actual Size" view then back. Once I saw that one, I've been sort of keeping my eye out, and a few days later the second one occured, which is much more obvious. While the first one affected maybe 10% of the shot and was subtle, the second affects more than the top right quarter of the shot, maybe 30-40% of the space. Both pictures were taken in the general direction of the sun - the first was maybe 30 degrees away from the sun, the second maybe 10 degrees (the spot that fills the top corner is from the sun).
This third problem is, of course, the most worrisome. But before calling in for a return I thought I'd see if anyone else has ever seen anything like this before, and also more generally on the first two questions, whether they are common issues for G5 owners.
And thanks to anyone who took the time to read all this... :) |

Id send it back to cannon. I dont know about the noise... But those lines look like something with interpolation has gone wrong or something.

I have never noticed my LCD flickering.
Are you sure the ISO is at 50? In some of the (dummy) auto modes, it defaults to AUTO. I find noise to be pretty minimal at ISO 50 or 100, at 200 it's annoying, and at 400 intolerable. Typically, the G5 is one of the better 5MP cams in terms of noise.
I also have not noticed the 3rd problem you mention.
Since you've only had it 3 wks, can you exchange it?
Good luck

I've shot primarily in program, Av, Tv and manual - almost all at 50 ISO. My understanding was it was supposed to be pretty clean at 50 and 100, like you said. On most shots it's OK, but I've done a lot of outdoor shots, and the sky gets a lot of noise, and indoor shots at 50 are much noisier than I would have expected. One of the things I was looking forward to (and weighed in my decision for the G5) was to be able to get a clean ISO50, plus the 2.0 aperature, and get a little extra speed in bright indoor shots. It hasn't quite been as good as I hoped, but maybe I expected too much.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I was hoping for a little reassurance that I wasn't nitpicking. I think I'll be calling Dell in the morning and see what I can get them to do. |
