This is probably a very stupid question....

I cannot understand why the image from my full frame D700 (with the FX sensor), comes out of the camera at the same length to width ratio (1.5 to 1), as does the image from my D300 (with the DX sensor).

I thought that the full frame sensor would yield a 1.3 to 1 ratio, the same as a 35mm negative.

Am I missing something here????

Thanks for any input,
Drake

I think you will find that the image is the same size, but without the 1.5x crop factor. So your 200mm lens will be 300mm on the D300 and 200mm on the D700. DX has crop factor of 1.5x approx, the FX has a crop factor of 1x.

Ehhmm, the normal ratio for 35mm / 135 film is 3:2 aka 36mm x 24 mm on the negative/positive. Not 1.3:1.

DX is just a standard 35mm 3:2 crop on an APS-C sensor. The C in APS-C stands for "Classic", with classic being the standard 35mm crop of 3:2.

I should have done the math...for some reason I thought the L to W radio from the FX sensor was longer and narrower than from a 35MM film negative.

Guess the bigger question was why there is no difference in output ratio between the DX and FX.... Thanks for the response.

The answer is implicit in Sander's response. APS-C is intended to mimic 35mm, but in a more compact form. So the 1.5:1 ratio was intentionally set the same.
