I personally found it a very technically unappealing photo. I dont really like the pose or coposition. I also agree the lighting is very harsh with the shawdows on the face etc... Both the models eyes and bottom are fighting for my eyes attention, there is no "comfortable" place to really just look at the photo. the fight for my eyes makes it all a little uneasy to look at. I also agree the back can just suck you attention into that nothingness. Also I dont really like the toning of the image or the lack of separation between the undergarments and the bed. There is little emphasis on the wings which I think is why you titled it what you did. I voted a 3.
Sorry to "slam" the photo... but I guess its good to learn this way..

Is the model giving you grief over the poor score?

There are two options:

A) Man up and tell her to look better while you take your photos or,
B) Take better photos.

Either way, you'll need to take more photos of her so it's not all such a bad thing.

I'm of course joking, but honestly, I'm not a fan of the shot in its own right. There's not much other than an attractive girl in saucy underwear - which is very nice but there are loads of similar pictures, widely available, on the net. Trust me, I've seen most of them. The difficulty with a common theme as this is that you are competing with all those similar shots that I've seen and remember. So you need to compete on the technical side of the photograph to make it stand out. That for me is lacking as well. The crop is awkward as is the way her shoulder is in front of her face casting the shadow. The shadow on the LHS and the corner of the walls is distracting. Her tattoo could be a really interesting feature, but I just can't see enough of it and so it looks messy.

Anyway, I hope this helps. Feel free to post some more shots if you can ;)

This reminds me of Judi's shot:

...in which the lighting was less than stellar. In both examples, the skin doesn't look soft enough and has some extreme saturation. Judi's shot did appeal more to those voting on a "Birthday Present [for a guy]" challenge than yours does to those voting on a "Signature Style" challenge... so that could explain why she got a higher score. Plus, hers is in-your-face sex (and humor), whereas yours seems kind of stuck between sex and innocence, confused which way to go.

People may have recognized Judi in her shot (though I don't see any comments regarding that), and everyone seems to love Judi. So that may be another reason for a higher score on hers.

Edit: missed a quotation mark.

Seeing that there's not much female input on this thread, so far, and as that I've also been a model, may as well put in my .02 cents worth...

First off, if this girl wants to emphasize her butt, she REALLY needs to work on it. Stairmaster (or at the very least, lunges), 45 minutes a day, 6 days a week. GO!

Second, this pose has been done to death and the shadows lend an amateur feel.

Third, if the emphasis is supposed to be on a tat on her shoulderblades...show it!!! Have her laying on her side, if need be almost curled up, black backdrop/bedspread to help isolate her, not difficult. Even if she's fully nude (lingerie would detract in this kind of shot) the tat would stand out.

In terms of the body pose, expression, I am pretty much in league with those that say to go and shoot a puppy (or kitten) if you want innocence. Don't pour a girl into lingerie and have her in a suggestive pose, then tell her to look innocent! I see some reluctance in her face, as you mentioned she was just getting comfortable with the whole shoot. I feel it shows.

Well, maybe more innocent than shooting a puppy...

For me eye flow through the image does not draw my eyes to the model, my eyes are always drawn to the white wall on top/left. Had you flipped the image 180 degrees and you would have scored one full point higher, imho.

Eye-contact with the model is easier, and the lighting / pose / shadow distractions become much less obvious.

To wit:

(Image flipped for demonstrative purposes, I will remove the image at OP's request.)

That was a magic flip! Never realized what was the flip option for. Now I got it!

Sorry, I didn't vote on this one. I am drawn to her eyes and her butt, which are both quite nice IMO. The shadow on the left does bother me, and the harsh lighting too. Technicals? I am not too qualified to comment on that but the photo itself isn't particularly striking. HOWEVER, I would have scored this over 5 somewhere simply because I can't get a pretty woman to pose for me in an outfit like that!

I REALLY like the BW version suggested by others.

okay another girls opinion who does shoot nudes as well.

First thing that I saw when I looked at this shot, was that she had some sort of lurgie. Her skin is so blotchy around her legs and thighs that it really looks bad. This can be caused by pushing your reds up too much.

You have her laying on her tummy so her butt is going to slouch sideways and give that flat look, there is nothing innocent looking about her at all. Is she wearing an apron over her thong? there is too much clothing on her to make it look sexy. twisting the hips, lowering one shoulder would have given you some lines that would have worked for you. her hand looks deformed, it si not a flattering shape holding up her head, clone her other hand out, it just plain looks weird. She has a stick coming out of her shoulder and ear. The back of bras always look like crap (I know I wear one)the fronts are always better. the shadow on her back bra strap makes it look like there is a roll of fat creeping over her bra. the way that that apron thing is on her body makes her look like her torso is short and has a pouch. she needed to tilt her chin up and shoulder down to make her face pop out a little more. the red saturations on the skin actually make it look like she has black arm hair when she doesn't (that is all about processing) you need to darken the end of her eyebrow as it looks like it stops in the middle of her eye.

this has nothing really to do with the model, this is all about how you tell her how to pose (which you should) and your post processing,. So there you go and honest critique.

To me, the above are great comments! Really helps me understand the process better and look differently at this photo.

I don't like the shadows and the background. Her skin is not smooth. I give it a 5.

Resurrected after six months... why?
07/15/2010 10:43:13 AM · #66
Indeed. If only a suggestion about a possible solution could be made...
07/15/2010 10:55:53 AM · #67
What the hell? Wow I can't believe it was resurrected too. Wow...when I clicked the link, I didn't even realize I originally started the post until I scrolled down.

The photo has been completely reedited from scratch and made to look better.

And there was no magic tummy tucks or butt enlargers performed. I didn't have to photoshop a new leg in nor change her clothes in post processing...just better photo enhancement.

I didn't see the date till now. LOL!!!!

I didn't bother to read anything past the OP. But I did have a close look at your photo, What I think killed your score are a few things.

1. some people just don't like sexy photos. Note: I am not part of that group. :)

2. some distracting shadows in the photo probably didn't help. Not just the one on her face that you mention in the notes.

3. lighting is a bit harsh for this type of picture, had it been a softer light it probably would have bumped your score up into the mid to high 5's

4. personally I would like to see a little bit of an arch in her back, put the butt up in the air just a little bit to give it a nice round curve. maybe a little less relaxed looking... that is just my personal taste however and may not have anything to do with how others scored your image.

That being said 4.9 by the recent standards of DPC voters is still respectable. It is just below the Average vote given by most so all in all you should still be happy with your efforts. It is a good picture.

ETA: didn't pay attention to the date either. lol
