A friend of mine forwarded this to me and made a posting about this on another artsite.
THE LoDi PROJECT, a gallery located in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, is hosting an international call for artists to help the earthquake disaster relief efforts in Haiti. All funds will be donated directly to Mercy Corps and designated to the immediate relief of the Haitian people. The art should arrive to the gallery by Thursday, February 4, 2010.
The way they're working it is like this: Each artwork will be sold for $25.00 - All works are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Each work can be any size but no larger than 11 x 17 inches and unframed. The artists will only sign the back of the work, therefore they remain anonymous to the guests of the exhibition until after sale. The guests to the exhibition have a chance to purchase the works of established international artists for a fraction of their regular cost. This is open to ANY artist, ANY level, ANYWHERE. Please visit the call for artists for additional detail.

Bump for the evening crowd.
Just a thought: Maybe someone has some prints sitting in their closet and getting dusty - this would be one good way to have them be enjoyed by someone who have your art to hang on their wall AND serve a good humanitarian cause. |

BUMP, I just found out we have a young lady (age 22) from our town still among the missing. She was on a humanitarian mission. |

My pieces were received yesterday. And for those of you who were wondering, the young lady is still among the missing. She was in the Montana Hotel (and from Lynn University)where there are a number of missing students and faculty. |

So sorry to hear that - I found out about a week ago in the paper that a mother of 3 in our hometown is holding out hope that her husband will be found. He was stationed in Haiti and staying in Hotel Montana - the last e-mail she received from him was 10 minutes before the quake. I have not heard any additional news on this.
My pieces were received yesterday - just as a friendly bump - if you have any of your own artwork that meets the submission specifications just sitting in the closet collecting dust it is still might not to late to donate by the Feb. 4 deadline.

Coincidences are so strange ... the young lady was on the phone with her mom until 7 minutes before it struck.

Yes, it is a good thing your trying to help out in Haiti. But if you really wanted to make a difference, you should be helping out the homeless and needy Americans. Take a walk/drive through your town and photograph the people in need in your town. I think we should put all this money and effort into our country instead. We have natural disasters, diseases, homeless, uneducated, poverty, and many other disasters in our country we need to worry about before we become heros and try saving others. I know this will be blown out of context by many, but before you do, please realize what is going on in Haiti, happens in America everyday.
I had the chance to go down and do a photojournalist assignment in Haiti a few days ago, just got back today. Those people down there are not as needy as the media is portraying them to be. It is more political than anything else. Yes, theres people in need still. Yes, it is a mess still. But those people that I encountered were just rude and straight up thief's. My experience while I was there, I mainly seen alot of people not in need. People stealing just to steal and get away with it. People fighting to be mean. It was a surreal scene. But it made me realize, and the others with me, that Haiti was not in need as much as what the media was portraying it to be. |

I'm glad someone brought that up; whilst Haiti has undoubtedly suffered a cruel blow, 3 million Americans die of starvation every year. Read that figure again- 3 million. I find it odd that 11,000 tons of food makes its may to Haiti from USA when (literally) millions of people on their native soil could be helped just as much.
I think desensitization has a large part to play in this. Because homeless guys are seen every day, it's very hard to give a shit. |

While I can easily believe that more than 3 million Americans suffer from health problems to which under- or malnutrition contributes, I don't believe that so many die of starvation -- I'd like to see your source for that statistic.
Leading Causes of Death -- USA (CDC)
Three million would appear to be more than the listed top ten leading causes -- hard to believe it would be overlooked ... maybe your statistic is the worldwide figure. |

Dear freybear3 and Tez please do not make the assumption that because people are helping out those in Haiti (who have suffered a massive disaster) they are not helping out those in our own country. We all know what assume breaks down to!
You do NOT know what my family does to help those less fortunate. We have always spent a lot of time, money, and effort helping those less blessed in the US.
Further sending one piece of art is not taking anything away from our own!!! It is merely doing something extra.

I know late response - but I could not have said it better. This effort *is* extra to what goodwill or charity one does. |
