Years ago I had a Gateway - worked fine, had it for a long time. Since then I've had a home-built and a couple of HPs. Was out today wandering about looking at new toys. Best Buy had a nice Gateway for what seemed to be a pretty darn reasonable price. The model number is DX4300-15E or some such. AMD Phenom II X4 Quad processor, 8G memory, 1 TB HD (though I don't know if that is a single drive or a combined total), ATI Radeon HD 3200. Comes with Windows 7 64 bit. I have CS4 and LR 2.0.
My desktop machine is on the slow boat on its way over here, with the data drive in "imminent failure" mode according to the status reports. To be honest, I can't remember the specs on the machine, but I think it has 4G of memory and a duo core processor. The laptop I am using at the moment is slowish. OK, just plain slow. And has a nifty screen glitch periodically.
So I'm considering a new toy. Just curious if anyone has any feedback on Gateway products more recent than my own from 10 years ago.

I'll bump this for you. ;o)
I had a Gateway years ago. Loved it, ran great. The cow thing.
I tried to look up the DX4300-15E. Not much, checked Cnet reviews, nada, didn't find an owners group.
Not so much the brand as they say, but the support. They say it's what goes on the inside.
Maybe one of our techy folks with pipe in for you.

| PC's. Especially desktops, boil down to the components. The video card is stable, and the rest of the components are solid. It's probably a single drive. With that much ram, you don't need to worry about how many sticks of RAM it has, cause you won't have to replace it for a significant amount of time. I think it'd make a good solid machine. |

I've had 3 Gateway systems over the years, the first two lasting over six years each. My current pc is the cheapest of them (about a year old now) with AMD Phenom triple core processors, 4GB Ram, 250 GB HD, and ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics card. I paid about $450. I run PSE-7 while surfing and downloading mp3's most evenings... never a problem.
I have always been pleased with Gateway computers. The only service I even needed was from a lightning strike that took out a modem and power supply on number one. (That was back in the Gateway Store era). I still have number two, as it needs a power supply and and perhaps more memory (has 1 gig) but would otherwise work. I think they are well made, and would continue buying Gatway in the future. |

Years and years ago (about 10) I used to work for a company who serviced Gateway computers in the UK. Good machines but people used to complain endlessly about their customer service.
That was a long time ago and in a different country, so I don't really know how much help that is to you, just thought I'd mention it :) |

Thanks, guys. The one I looked at physically was in a Best Buy and the model number is probably specific to them. Found a -19 model on Amazon that CNet rates as "average". And like I said, had one years and years ago and used it 'til it was so out of date I simply had to replace it. Way before my digital photo days.
This one also comes with a TV tuner but I just can't see ever really using that.
I'm just hoping it'll run Photoshop a bit faster than this laptop... :-) |
