My wife and I are heading to NYC for our anniversary and I am contemplating renting a lens. We will only be bringing the Canon and already have these lenses; Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II, Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. We would like to shoot at night from the Empire State Building and know that tripods are not allowed. Any suggestions regarding a lens and maybe even somewhere reputable in NYC to rent one would be appreciated. |

You seem to have all the ranges covered. If you want to rent better glass, Adorama has a rental department.
You might find Top of the Rock a better place to shoot from than the Empire State Building. The top level is out in the open, no bars or glass, just a waist high cement railing. No tripods either, but it has flat tops that you can rest your camera on and if you bring a small bean bag (like those used in the tailgate game cornhole) you can control the angle of your camera. |

I would highly recommend a Wide Angle. The archetechture is stunning there and you really only get the full effect from a wide angle. If you can get a 10-22, 12-24 or 11-16 lens you'll be in heaven. I spend a little over a week in october and just loved every minute of that city.
Here a link to some of my shots from that trip.

You can actually take a tripod up to the top of the rock. It's kind of deciving what you can or can't do up there. They say as long as you use it as a monopod its all good. I found that out after the fact. I still managed to get some decent shots through the cracks on the glass. Theres just enough room to fit your lens through. Definetly go up to the very top.

Great advice and links Phillip. I will check on those lenses for sure. We did hit B&H last time and picked up our telephoto lens which has become a favorite. Sounds like the "Top of the Rock" is the better choice for a vantage point...I think we might check out Fulton Ferry park as well. Still making the list though... |

I'll second the super-wide suggestion.
And be sure to go to St. Patrick's Cathedral. Wow. Just Wow. |
