I had this problem for a while and I never thought to address it. I just used a different computer. Well now I got a new desktop computer and the problem is now a serious problem.

All my DVD's that I burned before on my old laptop, don't show up on my new laptop or my new computer. My old laptop was running windows XP and both of my current computers are running Windows Vista. All my old photos were burned on multiple copies of DVD's and none of copies show any data. I know that I should have kept them on an external hard drive, but this is when I first started to keep my work. And it only seems to be most of the photos and not all. I had a girl come back for photos from three years ago (2007) and I can't retrieve the photo.

Is there a patch or something from Vista to fix this problem....has anyone else had this problem?

The problem most likely isn't the computer. Some drives burn disks in a manner that only that drive can read. You likely need your old laptop to see them, or pay a company to retrieve the data. Most early burners were like this and gave you that warning.

The problem is that some photo on the CD's can be viewed...some CD's show no datas, but some of the CD's show some of the photos. Lets say there are three folders of photos, one folder will show some photos while the other two are empty.

And the drive on the other computer did have a "close session" so that it could be viewed on other computers. They used to be viewable on both my old laptop and my old desktop.

You may have to try it in some other computers until you find a drive that likes them.

Had the same problem, borrowed my old XP computer back from my son. Copied the CD̢۪s to the computer then onto a Flash Drive then to my Windows 7 computer.

What did you use to burn the DVDs?

There is the posiblilty that your disks have just grown old too. I can't remember exact numbers but I know that home burned CD's and DVD's do not have a very long life span. I have had disks that I burned less than two years ago stop working or become unreadable. Not sure why it happens but it does.

That would probably depend on the quality of the discs. I have 10 year old CDs I burned with MP3s and they still worked on all the computers I had since then. I've used Maxells for CDs and Verbatim for DVD archiving. I've never used house brands or the cheaper ones with weird names. ;\

The disks I had go bad were memorex and sony, Most of them were DVD-R with home video on them but I have had a couple of CD-R disks with data die also. Ironically all the disk I have made with MP3's - MP4's on them are still working alot of those are off brands.

Here is one of the articles I read.

They were DVD-R and I have to go back home and check but I think they were Memorex. The deal is that the folders that contained the photos still show up, just not the photos themselves. And I don't understand why if there are three folders on the DVD...1 will show the photos in it and the rest will show up empty. And I made duplicates of each DVD during that time...it'll be the same on each DVD.

Film negatives FTW.

Well, one thing that you can first do, is check the amount of space used inside the CD's, if the photos do not appear but the used space is there, it just means that it cannot recognize the files.

One good thing is to try sometimes different software, I found good results with Nero and some data recovery software, that are usually not dependent on Windows to recognize the files. And then try and back them up in another CD / DVD.

Best of luck,
Joao

Are some of the files RAW files? Your new OS may need a plug-in before it can open them.
