I'm very close to buying a 50D so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Is the noisiness of the camera is really an issue?
Is the software compatible with my Vista 64?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

or....should I go for a 7D even if I don't do video?

edit to add 7d

I have been amazed at how noise-free the images are, even when using noise-enhancing treatments like Topaz adjust, I don't have too much trouble. The reviews I read that were pixel-peeping against the 40D had me concerned as well, but the camera has been awesome and I have no complaints. I upgraded from a 20D, so I suspect you will see a similar improvement from your 30D.

I have 32 bit Vista and 64 bit Win7 at home. The only issue I have had is that Canon does not have a 64 bit codec for their RAW files yet, so I must use a third party codec if I want to be able to see RAW thumbnails and previews in the 64 bit OS. DPP works fine. I don't use the EOS utility.

Thanks Steve.
So hard to weed out the hype/haters/ etc.

Had a 50D and it's a solid camera. Sold mine and got a 7D instead and am much happier with it - I find it to be a more capable camera, and I do find the higher ISO performance better than the 50D. I don't do any video whatsoever, and I'd still say that the 7D is worth it.

I really dislike the Canon software, so I convert my 7D images to DNG files, which Photoshop can then read. The DNG converter is a free download.

Just my $.02 :-)

I've been very pleased with the high ISO performance of my 50D. As long as the exposure is dead on even 12800 is usable imho. I'm by no means a pixel peeper, but I did shoot a range of ISOs with my 50D for a photography workshop. I did this to show what ISO is, not to test my camera.

I've uploaded those shots to an ISO folder in my workshop if you want to take a look.

With that being said, I don't see how you could go wrong with a 7d if money is not a deciding factor. From what I've seen the 7d is very clean at high ISO. Either way - 50d or 7d, I think you will be happy with it.

I only have Vista 32 so can't speek to your other question.

7D LCD screen alone is worth the price of admission. Plus you can tune the camera to each of your lenses wherever you have front-back focus issues. I'm super-impressed with what I've seen so far, in the 12 hours we have had it. I'd say if you possibly can, skip 50D and go 7D.

The 7D is a better camera all around, but you need high quality glass to make the most of it. Only two of yours (the 50mm and Sigma Macro) qualify IMO. If I were you, I'd go lower end on the camera (maybe even 40D or T1i) and get a better lens or two.

As an owner of a 50D I don't think the noisiness is an issue (although 1600ISO is the max, sometimes 3200 ISO will work, forget the higher values), but it depends on the situation. Last week we did a serious test at school with full frames and "cropped frames". As expected, the full frame cameras (Canon and Nikon, no significant difference) did a much better job when you increase the ISO values. So, I guess, you need to decide how often do you need high ISO values and is it worth the price? No one had a 7D however, but my guess it's somewhere in between, since we noticed a remarkable difference in the noise between "old" and "new" model cameras.
