| I'd really love to know whether he says stuff like this just for publicity or if he really thinks that way. Blaming disasters on the people who are the victims is just so bizarre. |

| The people doing the blaming are bizarre. They make similar wacko claims for any disaster (Katrina, Andrew, 9/11, etc.). |

I think it makes perfect sense.
It is equal to the proposition that Saudi Arabia is blessed with oil and we can therefore establish with some certainty that Allah is the one true god and Mohammed is his messenger.
It also demonstrates that Christian fundamentalism has a very nasty side to it.

| I just find it funny that these small people are incapable of inventing a god that isn't as small as they are. Instead of some regal creator of the universe, he's nothing but a peevish, prissy drama queen with a homicidal bent that vents his spleen via wholesale slaughter every time someone suggests he isn't real. Please. A god with an inferiority complex? How fake does it have to be before it's seen for what it is? |

'And ya'know.... Mick... something happened a long time ago on dpchallenge... and the people might not wanna talk about it...
They were under the heel of Pentax... uhh, you know... the *ist D, DL uhh, DS or whatever... and... they got together and swore a pact to The Devil. They said "We will serve you... if you get us better low low-light performance and more ribbons." True Story.
And, so... The Devil said "Ok, it's a deal." And, uhh.. they... kicked the Pentax users out, you know... the Canon users revolted and got themselves L-glass... but ever since, they have been cursed... by one thing after another -- desperately lacking high votes.
That user base of dpchallenge is one community -- it's cut down the middle... on one side is Canon and on the other side is Nikon... and everybody else... The Canon-users are prosperous, ribbon-winners, full of top-10 challenge-positions, etc. Nikon and others are in desperate need of ribbons.
Same community... uh... they need to have and we need to provide for them... a great turning to Sony... and out of this tragedy, I'm optimistic something good may come -- but right now, we're voting for the bad images, and the bad images are just unimaginably bad.'

| Don't know if seismic activity has been linked directly to global warming, but I assume the dail telegraph insists there is no global warming, so there's nothing to listen to there. |

Do you have your numbers right? 10 inches sounds huge to me in 100 years.
EDIT: I found 7 inches (average 1.8mm a year) which is 30% less than you said but still more than I would have guessed (I was thinking 1-2 inches).
What about tides? They change the shift of water by feet twice a day. That's even faster.

I'm trying to do some back of the envelope calculations and working on a 2x2 post-it is not good. Here's the question: How much does an extra 10 inches of water compare to the weight of the caribbean plate? Here's what I found so far:
Caribbean plate: 3.2 million square km
Average depth of the oceanic plate: 10 km
Average density of oceanic plate: 3g/cubic cm
Average density of water: 1g/cubic cm
So, the story problem for those who wish to goof around. What % of the plate's total weight is an extra 10 inches of water?
It's an interesting question. Thanks for bringing it up Shannon. I need a little diversion like this this morning. |

It was just a ballpark guess off the top of my head (I was looking at a graph that showed over 20cm since 1900, with a cm being a little under 1/2 inch), but 7-8 inches is probably right. The exact number is not important to the point I was making since even a few inches represents a lot of mass. Note also that the rate of sea level rise is accelerating (currently 2.8-3mm/yr).

Of course. Tidal forces from the moon account for most seismic activity, and adding millions of tons water is going to magnify that force. Imagine balancing a tray of water on your hand... in addition to the extra load stress itself, any tidal forces will be exaggerated as more weight shifts around. |
