What are folks experience of the 12-24mm AF-S f/4G and the 10-24mm f3.5-4.5?

The 10-24 is slightly cheaper than the 12-24 ... which is the best from a quality point of view (ie focus and distortion?)

Hey, few people really need lenses that will last 75 years; if you do, you can still buy brand-new manual-focus AI-s lenses that will last longer than any of us.

I would've gone with the 12-24 because of the buildquality. But anyway, if my math is correct:

10mm + DX crop = 15mm
12mm + DX crop = 18mm

3mm difference

hmmm .... Kind of feel build qualit it's the 12 lens but ken despite that seems to imply optically the 10-24 is the one to go for

That's right: on some shots the 10-24mm is sharper on the left while the 12-24mm is sharper on the right, and on the next duplet of shots, the effect reverses, even when all this is done on a tripod.

I assume the optic quality is really close. Look the table at the end of the 10-24 page.
If you want to be sharp on the left, choose the 10-24 ...
If I had to choose, I would take the 12-24 because the other one got this "pump" extension which don't like dust. But if you don't lean in sand or decays this won't be a problem...

If you're using an FX camera, then the only reasonable choice would be the 12-24.

If you're using a DX camera, you could go with either lens, but the 12-24 might be cost overkill. The 10-24 is designed for a DX camera (like your D90).

My opinion is that a wider FOV is better.

Both of them are DX lenses. Concidered Sigma 10-20mm?

Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 lens is awesome! Very well built, fast (2.8) and MUCH cheaper than Nikon... Very sharp too...

Quite.... originally I thought I'd go for the 14mm prime partly for the dust reason.... till I saw the price :-)

Yes I remember PMing you about some of your shots with that one. Dang it there seems to be as many opinions as there are photographers, couple of my mates reckoned Tokina in general we fairly low quality compared to Sigma ...

... I'm coming to the conslusion that I should probably buy 4 different lenses, use 'em for a while and e-bay the 3 I don't like :-/ (course I can't afford that)

Uh, no......the 12-24 is a DX lens.....

12-24 @ Nikon USA

I love my 12-24......it's garnered me a bunch of 6+ scores in the past two months since I got it.

You may be referring to the 14-24mm f/2.8, which would be a good choice for FX. The 12-24mm is actually DX. The 10-24mm is also DX as you mention, but is by far the more inferior of the three lenses (the 14-24mm being the best -- and bar far the more expensive).

Whoops! Yes, without even thinking about it, I was comparing the 14-24 and the 12-24. I didn't even know about the 10-24.

Thanks Louis, Jeb, and Bjornar.

FWIW, the Sigma 12-24 is a full frame lens.

I may be wrong.... BUT I think Sigma makes a 12-24 DX and FX lens... so look out and make sure to get the FX one..

(but I may be wrong...)

The 12-24 is DG (meaning it works on FX) and the 10-20 (both the 3.5 and 4-5.6) is DC (meaning it is DX only). I own the 10-20 4-5.6 and am very pleased with it (would prefer the 3.5 constant but it came out after I already had the 4-5.6). It can be a little bit soft in some cases but is certainly acceptable for the cost savings.
