It's a nice shot but it's missing something. Probably a wider frame but who knows? The balloon and girl both being cut takes away some information that might have been pleasing to see. A different crop or shooting from a greater distance might have accentuated the theme more dramatically. Dark shots are cool but in this case kind of glum, for what seems to be an uplifting image or "motif".

I did try one Lensbaby shot and it got in...

Thank you for the insight. These are exactly my thoughts about my photograph. I never particularly was in love with it, but it gained some good feedback here so I thought it might appeal to 1x as well. I don't like that house in the background, and I also don't like the baloon being cut off. But it is a candid shot and it was the only shot I got and I didn't have much choice.

Your photo is legendary. I am surprised LB didn't ask you to use it as their promo shot.

Hopefully Steve entered it in the LB competition, I would love to see it win.

I did enter it but the last time I looked it wasn't in their folder...

Kinda blew it off after that.

eta: I saw it here when I first entered it but went up and down that page a few times last month and can't find it. Who knows...?

Zig - Sorry for being so direct but it usually seems pretty obvious to me why images don't get in...and that goes for my own, as well. It's always worth a try...right? I had a reject last week but passed up 4-5 slots cus I'm not feeling it these days. I may reach back to see if an oldie but goodie makes the cut but I don't think I have anything that fits right now.

I thought i'd try a few, the critique looks really good. Can i ask a quick technical question though. On the submission page it says...

File should not exceed 2MB, but have as high quality as possible. Use the "Save for web"-feature in Photoshop and adjust compression so it never exceeds 2MB but is as high as possible.
We recommend 900-950 pixels for landscape format and 700-750 pixels height for portrait format.

Now, unless i'm being really stupid, if i save at those pixels, even at the highest quality, i cant get anywhere near 2MB. 600-700kb i can manage. Am i missing something here?

Nope, you're right. I always save images for 1x at 100% and have never approached the limit.

Thanks David. I was racking my brains how to get near to 2mb.

I just got a letter from Lensbaby. I'm IN! Just wish I could find the damn shot but won't bother to look again.

Wow, congratulations Steve! It's a wonderful shot and a great success. I can see the shot, I clicked on 'show all submissions' and ctl+f searched your name.

oooops! Sorry...sorry...sorry. No I just meant they have the image and it's entered. I did give another look and don't see it BUT they said it's there somewhere.

"ctl+f searched"

What is that? And how do you do it?

Well, I do hope it'll get published in the end, and that my early exaltation was prophetic ;-)

So, go the the bottom of the submissions page, click on view all submissions, and press Ctrl and F buttons at the same time, it'll open the page finder, simply put your name in and it should highlight it.

Cheers

Does anyone else have trouble with 1x not displaying correctly, or as in my case for the last day, not displaying uploaded images, and/or kicking you to a page that has nothing to do with the uploaded images, and telling you that you have to log in? I obviously, am logged in, or I couldn't get to the screen to click on my uploaded photos......virtually every time I'm on that site, I get error messages.

Try and find Jeb Boyd....

I can't even get to my own self.....8>(

I'm fairly certain I am not 1x material. I have nothing but grief with everything I try to do with the site. It is definitely NOT user friendly. When I navigate from page to page, it alternates between showing me as logged in or out, I can't access my own images, I get constant error messages.....what's the attraction for that nonsense?

I think one of the main keys to 1x is originality...OR a fresh perspective.

As I post, there are 5-6 images that I've never seen before, fairly original and a few others that are very nicely executed.

This one is really sweet.

and look at the beautiful toning on this one...

Look at this Dudes toning style. It makes the stuff you see around here look really, really basic.

Go beyond HDR and figure out, what ever the hell that guy's doing, analyze it, experiment with it and make it your own. Every noob and his brother and cousin are doing HDR...like flipping a light-switch.

Not everything they post is fresh and new but pound for pound they do a really nice job. Do some soul searching and find a new perspective. Homeless guys are a dime a dozen on the internet. I understand that for some people it's challenging and exiting to shoot them but for me as a viewer, a big yawn and bothersome at this point having taken and seen enough of those image to a sickening proportion.

e301's first published image. WTG!

I haven't been able to access 1x for days, with either IE or Firefox. Anyone else having this problem?
