In punk rock and hardcore, it seems that the new up and coming thing to do is to get your face tattooed with some message of some sorts.

For example, an old friend of mine: Rick Ta Life

While that fella is a bit older, a lot of the people I'm seeing are younger 18-25 year olds with facial tattoos. I was thinking it would be interesting to do a series of images of headshots, in black and white, real silvery toned almost, and have a short q&a accompany it. The interview would be sort of a why did you get what you got, what are your ambitions for your future, do you think it will impact your future, do you regret it, etc.

I know the whole tattoo photo thing is quite over done and there are thousands of tattoo series, I think this would be an interesting look at it from a more extreme and life impacting angle. While we have all seen heavily tattooed people, for the most part they can cover it up in a suit and tie or something to that extent, while this is a statement that cannot be hidden.

So what i'm getting at: Good idea or too cliche and already over worked?

Not too sure about the photography aspect of this... But...

That's sure one hell of a way to guarantee that you will be either self-employed or unemployed for life...

Thats kind of the question I'm getting at with the subjects.

I mean there are industries where its fine, and there are people who are employed and that kind of work done: construction, laborers, tattoo artists, work-from-home programmers, etc. But for the most part, if you aren't the top of your field or independently wealthy, its gonna be a rough time I would think.

Personally, I've always been interested in why a person chose the tattoo that they have. It took me over 5 years to finally get comfortable enough with the one I chose, and it's on my lower calf.
I know several people who have face tattoos, and the majority (unless their job allows it) end up with regrets.

I'll echo Cory in that I'm not sure about the photography aspect of it. But I believe the stories will bring it all together.

Good luck!

if you do something that's already been done, you're probably wasting your time.

if you put your mind to it and come up with a fresh package, it could be a lot of fun. anytime you put stories, quotes, etc with your images, you have the opportunity to create something unique. (not to mention that the ability to produce interesting prose makes you much, much more marketable/valuable than just someone who can pop a shutter.)

interviewing people is a discipline into itself. once you master the mechanics, you'll find a lot of room to move. more info here.

it sounds like you might have something. the real key, though, as with any type of project, is commitment. set a goal, set a schedule, then see it through to the end...

I think this will be a pretty solid character study of a "new breed"

I mean there has been punk rock kids with facial tattoos for as long as there has been punk rock, but those have typically been squatter kids, urbanites, etc. These are the new breed of suburban youth. I don't know, I might try a few out and see if its interesting. I think the problem might be that they are too close to having it done to be able to give true answers on their feelings about it.

If that makes sense. If you go and get a tattoo tomorrow, youre gonna say you love it no matter what ,but 5 years from now, you have a clearer vision and time to reflect. So who knows.

It would be real cool if you were able to contact them again in a few years, when they begin taking the idea of a career seriously.

Another trend to look at, beyond the tatoos would be body piercings.

In a few years the world will resemble the Mad Max films and it'll be those without face tattoos who find it hard to fit in with the dune-buggy riding apocalypse pirate gangs. I think that should be kept in mind.
