How do embedded color profiles work with uploaded images?
I recently calibrated my monitor and saved the settings as a color profile. When I open an image in Photoshop I have the option of assigning a color profile to the image that I am opening. If I save the image with a specific color profile then upload that image to dpchallenge will that color profile be used to display the image to anyone viewing it on the web site? Is the embedded color profile ignored? Is there a standard color profile used by default?

They don't; profiles are stripped.

The monitor profile you create (and use as per your O/S requirements) will automatically be employed by profile/icc-aware applications, such as photoshop, to display images "correctly" to you within those applications. Assigning your monitor profile to images you open in photoshop is ill-advised. Usually, profile assignment is done for images with input device-specific profiles (like a custom scanner/camera profile), usually when there is no embedded profile (or even the wrong one is embedded).

No.

Pretty much.

Not exactly, but convert to sRGB prior to uploading for best results. There's more to it than that, but that's the best advice to get one out of the starting gate.

I just did a google search for "sRGB color profile display web page" and found tons of information. It seems that, depending on the application and/or web control used to display the image, sRGB is the default color profile used. Check out the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: Display Color Matching Does Not Occur
In the first paragraph the article states, "When you use Integrated Color Management (ICM) programs that perform color matching, the display color profile is not applied when bitmaps are displayed. Only the standard sRGB color transformation is performed, regardless of which profile has been set as the default display color profile."
Better yet, check out this article by the International Color Consortium: A Standard Default Color Space for the Internet - sRGB
I still have a great deal to learn, but I am beginning to get a better grasp on this subject. Thank you very much for your help.
Regards,
Mick
