Having seen the thread/side-challenge pitting Panasonic Lumix LX3s against Leica D-LUX 4s in the December Free Study I was curios how the usual combatants compared i.e. Canon and Nikon.

To my surprise Canon took out all top 5 places and 8 of the top 10 spots.

So I started looking at earlier Free Studies... and before too long I had data for all the Free Studies for 2009, which I collated and applied the same scoring system used in the Unofficial Points Race.

And here are the final scores for 2009.
Canon 482pts

Nikon 135pts
Sony 12pts
Olympus 10pts
Konica-Minolta 10pts
Pentax 6pts
Panasonic-Lumix 5pts

From this, I find it hard to understand how there's any question/discussion/argument about which brand is better ;)

What is the ratio of users on this site?

Not being a stat guy and not wanting to put a lot of effort into looking at the equipment database I'll just say that my guess is that those numbers correlate directly with the number of members who own each different camera brand. It is well known that DPC has a very high percent of Canon DSLR owners so is it such a surprise that your numbers come out the way they do?

As a side if you look at the ribbon winners wurrently on the front page you will see that their are 6 Canon DSLR's, 4 Nikon DSLR's, 1 Sony DSLR and 1 Canon P&S. Now what should we make of that?

I'll give you that on DPC they seem to but I have noticed that since both Canon and Nikon now have FF DSLR's those bodies seem to be winning a much higher percentage of challenges and my guess is the ratio of those is about the same.

Okay... doing a quick and nasty using the numbers on the equipment database the numbers pan out like this

Canon owners (DSLR + P&S) = 39074
Nikon owners (DSLR + P&S) = 19569

That's a ratio of 2.00 Canons to every Nikon on DPC

But there are almost twice as many Canons in the database than Nikons (183 v 101)... so the users per model are quite similar (214 v 194).

So, even if we were to take these into consideration, Canon doing almost 3 times better than Nikon suggests that the pure number of Canons only partly explains their dominance... guess the rest would have to be Canon's ability to take better photos, OR it might be better photographers are attracted to Canon... one or the other I guess :)

Yeah.... The camera takes the pictures. If you'd be shooting Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Sony, whatever you'd obviously be producing tons of shit.

You must all by Canons. Statistically it gives you a higher chance of a ribbon. Wihtout even puting any effort into a better photo. Wow.
