Would this make for a good portrait lens? Best buy is selling one for $199.99. I should be able to get a much sharper image with this lens right?

What size portrait? Full body or face only? For face only I would go for a 50 1.8 or 1.4. If you want a bit more body, the 35 might do it.

I have both the 50mm 1.8 and the 35mm 1.8 and i LOVE them for portraits!!! You can find the 50mm cheaper than 199, I would check adorama or BHphoto for their prices...
I used the 50mm almost exclusively for portraits until I got the 35mm for Christmas. and yes the photos are very sharp with both lenses. |

| I have both the 50 and the 35 and use them for portratis and other indoor shooting. As said here the 50 is great for head shots and the 35 does half body and full body well. They are both sharp and fast. |

I was also thinking of a 60mm 2.8 but can't decide.
Are the 50 and 60 good for half or full body also or would I find myself only wanting to do head shots with it?

Just to make things more confusing, I also use the Nikkor 85mm for portraits. You can take a few steps back from your subject (which many people appreciate) but still get intimate portraits with beautiful background bokeh.
Edit: you could step back with the 50mm and get a good body portrait. But it's best for intimate shots. Example with the 50mm.

Yeah, I'd prefer the 85 too, but they are more expensive. Just missed out when Kiwiness sold his.
And they are all primes, just move around to get what you want. A 35 close to the face might only make people look a little bit fatter than they really are.

| I don't own the 35mm but have used one a couple of times that a friend lent to me. It is kind of a cheap plastic build but very sharp picture quality. The reason I used it was because I was shooting a family portrait for some other friends at their house. The room was a bit small and my 50mm 1.4 was not wide enough to get everyone into the frame unless I would have gone outside and shot through an open window. If you know you are going to be in a close area, Then the 35 is definately a lens to have in your bag. If you know you are always going to have a little extra room to back up to get everything you want into the frame. Spend a little extra and get the 50mm 1.4 Build Quality is quite a bit better and it will give you very sharp images with a creamy bokeh. |

From this discussion I think I may try to get both the 35 and the 50 or 60 from eBay used. It seems I can probably get both for the price of one that way.
Also, the 60 could serve as a macro lens from what I understand so I'm guessing the same should go for the 50 too.....right?

Really? Even when corrected for distortion? As far as I know, a wide-angle lens exaggerates relative sizes between objects at different distances, making close ones huge and far ones small in comparison.
Plus, it's a "normal" lens on an APS-C sensor, which is supposed to give a human eye-like field of view, so even if it makes them fatter than longer focal lengths, it wouldn't make them fatter than they really look to us... |
