I understand your stress. It's happened, and the only thing to do is wait and hope that the damage is not too serious. Maybe next beach trip with your camera it would be a good idea to use one of the plastic bag camera covers. Wishing you best of luck. Don't be too hard on the kid. We were young once.

i wonder if you would be as self depricating if it was that nice 50d that got toasted, cut the guy some slack, he is obviously just having fun, trying to laugh it off |

It's only a material loss. At least no one is hurt. Every minute of the day someone is getting seriously injured or killed in accidents. This accident is fixable in some way. Realize it happened and let it go. Life goes on :) |

On the bright side, KN, you now have an excellent subject for one of the current challenges.
My DSLR quit one time, and I bought another to have backup while it was out for repairs. I must be addicted to this crazy hobby.

If it were not for that Stupid Smacking Law. I would say. Give him a few wacks on the backside. But you would probably get arrested. Then again at 37 he is old enough, maybe Mr Police Man would cut you a bit of slack. lol
ETA: A couple of people in this thread need to get a sense of humor. Not everything or everyone on this planet is as serious as you... sheesh!!!!!

sorry to say but i'd say who is the photographer who takes his expensive camera on family outings kneedeep into seawater? |

I would of thought that any person son/friend/whoever should have the common decency to offer at least half the repair cost if not more.
If it were my son I would of simply said "thanks for that, now let's go get it fixed on YOUR card and you can buy the fish n chips too" "IDIOT!"
failing that tie him up with gaffa tape and tickle him into a good deal. |

Grandpa wanted photos of his grandkids playing in the water. His son at 37 years old should hold enough common sense to not be splashing water on the camera.

Wasn't someone willing to trade a child of theirs for a lens-cleaning cloth? |

I thought it was more like: what photographer WOULDN'T take his expensive camera on a family outing kneedeep into seater? Been there, done that, raised kids smart enough to know I'd always have a camera with me (although they're only 10 and 14, so there's still time to get stupid))
I agree that he should pay half the cost. I also think donny and marie is way too mean-- how about boy george?
