Okay - I have looked and looked at camcorders and have narrowed it down to either the Canon HF-200 or the Canon HF-S100/S10. There is a $300 price difference and for our home video (basketball baseball game recording amongst other home memories) needs - do we need the extra benefit of the HF-S100/S10? Man of the house has big hands and wants ease of use of controls to be paramount so we nixed the JVC Everio GZ HM400.
Anyone have experience with either? He is calling me cheap for going for the HF-200 - but I think it meets our needs. Plus, I might be able to parlay that extra savings into the Nikon D800 savings account :-0 |

What are the main differences? I have a HF-10 and think it's pretty sweet. |

It would probably come down to a feature comparison. If there's something on the higher priced model that you can't live without then that's the one to get.
If you can find reviews, check them for the features that are common to both. One camera might be a better performer in one area or the other. |

Certainly the more expensive model has more features - but I don't know that I need them. The biggest one (that I can see) is MP - 3.89 compared to 8.59. We just want home video capability, |

How hard is it to pull video? Did you get software; i.e., pinnacle, etc? The camera store guy said it was a bit difficult for people to transfer. |

Ya, I can agree with this. It's not intuitive and I wind up just treating the camcorder like an external drive and copy the raw streams over manually.
One thing to consider with the 3MP vs. 8MP is you are gonna have to have a pretty sweet desktop to edit and render something that's 8MP. Or are you just talking 8MP on the still shots? I had to upgrade my whole setup to be able to edit and render AVCHD. One other tidbit, if you don't have Windows 7 (or at least the new Windows Media Player), consider the upgrade. WMP that ships with Win 7 can play RAW AVCHD which makes a world of difference. Before I couldn't even easily view the raw footage, or at least view it so it looked good. |
