This is related to what was discussed in this thread -- my question is similar and I just wanted to get a little more feedback.

Pulling the trigger on a set of ABs, and from a bit of reading, I've seen very mixed reviews on their light stands. Specifically, some say they are too light-weight; others say they are rebranded and can be bought from third parties for ~$20-30 less per stand.

I know there are quite a few AB users here on DPC -- so my question to you is, how do you like the AB light stands? I believe I'd only consider the 10' stand (LS3050) for a reflector or backdrop; considering the 13' "heavy duty" (LS3900) and/or the 13' air-cushioned (TS13AC) for actual heads and modifiers.

Do you find the AB stands suitable, or would I be better served picking up my stands from another manuf.?

i have 2 stands: an AB 10' and a lumopro 8' a/c. i went cheap b/c they are just holding speedlites so i dont need anything heavy duty. since it suits my needs and i dont have any heavy duty stands to compare it to id say i like the AB stand. the footprint could be larger for when it is extended the whole 10' but its not too tippy.the legs are very sturdy, the center column less so. if the load is centered there should be no problem.

I have three of the heavy-duty 13' stands and I've never had any problems with them. I also have boom arms on all of my stands, which makes them much more versatile. With the booms, I can put a light or softbox almost anywhere and at any angle. Apparently, some people had problems with the boom arms and AlienBees discontinued them.

Of course, if you have a fat wallet, there are better stands available, but for the money, I think AB's heavy-duty stands are a good value.

I have two of the LS3900's and love them. I sold my AB's a while back and yet I kept the light stands and still use them for mobile work with my speedlights, or when I borrow a Strobe for bigger work.

Thanks for the replies. Perhaps I'll give the stands a try after all. Anyone have any experience with the LS3900 vs. TS13AC (air-cushioned) models? Looks like the measurements are virtually the same; 1 lb heavier and 1" wider footprint. Think they are worth the extra $$$?

I use both regularly, and were I buying one for myself, I would opt for the air cushion version. Just a little safety feature for the time when you will think everything is snug and the shaft with your expensive strobe will slide right down.... BANG or Swwooossshh, it is up to you :-)
