Hi
Canon a40 was introduced in 2002, i own one and like to own another one before it is taken of shelf. I stay in India and it is already not available. I am new to digital Photography and have no idea how long are models available after they are introduced.
Price i saw these day is really great but still would like to wait for bit longer time , say just before company stops selling a40.
any idea how long does company sell a camera after it is introduced

Hi Gagan.

For all practical purposes, the A40 is no longer available. The only way you could get one would be a used one, a refurbished one, or (very unlikely) a stray one left on some warehouse shelf somewhere.

Right now, the "lowest" level camera in that series that's still generally available is the A60. It's selling right now for about 25% less than the A40 sold for (and the price appears to be starting to drops a bit more), and is overall a better camera. For about the same price as what the A40 sold for (or just a little more) you can get the A70, which has several added features over the A60, but the primary one is an extra megapixel. There's apparently an A75 getting ready to come out, so the A70 and A60 are probably about to be discontinued in the next few months.

I think it probably varies by product line (the higher end models seem to have a little more staying power), but it seems that for the most part, models seem to stay around about a year. But that probably depends a lot on how popular it is, how quickly the competition releases a better competing model, and how quickly the company itself develops new technology and features.

Your A40 is a fine digicam but being 2 yrs old in this field makes it obsolete. Unless you have a very strong attachment to that model you can surely find a newer model with better features at a lower price. Digicams is a "hot" market in the world of technology so patience can really pay off for the consumer.

Hi Scott thanks for a great reply.
Well reasons i want to another a40 despite owning one already as follows-:

1) Well i am getting great 4x6 , 5x7 prints, i am told i can get excellent 8x7 ( i hope to try soon) so idea of owning 3 or 4 or 5 megapixel really doesnt excite me as print quality i am getting is great.

2) Aperture range offered by camera is amazing from 2.8-4.8, 8-14, i use two powerful studio strobes and i need a a digital camera that offers wide range of aperture, i dont think there any other digital camera i know that offers same rane in this class, i would have loved if i could have pc socket or hot shoe to attach an external flash in this camera but than some one would say throw in a fat guy and a tree you have christmas.

Well i just checked prices on net and thought a40 offered by company was brand new for price between 150-180$, which an amazing price.
I love to buy nother brand new a40 as some one from my family is visiting usa this summers and felt that i wont be able to get hands on a good camera like a40 ever,i mean for my needs
