Happy New Decade to ME!

Any advice about moving from PC to Mac - hints tips and high fives will be welcomed.

Anyone suffering from a hangover or grumpy-i-tis can ignore this happy thread!

I'm off to clean up my room before finding a place for iMac to call home.

Yes, run Software Update (under the Apple menu), let the computer do the update. Run Repair Permission (> Applications folder > Utility Folder > Disk Utility).

Here's my tips in no particular order

Yep, for the first month or so you'll think that life was easier with a PC because you're used to them, after that you'll never want to go back :)

If you find you absolutely need to use Windows, get VirtualBox, it's free and open source and the virtual machines run really well. It can prove useful during the transition period.

iPhoto is ok, but Aperture is a much better choice for managing your images, unless you're already invested in Lightroom in which case I don't think there's any reason to switch.

I know you just spent loads of money on your lovely new iMac, but you might want to get an external drive and use Time Machine for backups, it's really useful and you don't even notice it's there, takes all the hassle out of a backup routine.

OpenOffice is a very comprehensive free open source office suite if you don't want to invest in MS Office or iWorks.

Pretty much all the shortcuts you're used to etc, are replaced with etc.

If you're struggling to get your Apple mouse to right click, make sure you lift your left finger first, it's a stupid design and the reason I went out and bought a Logitech mouse.

Safari was the only browser that properly handles colour management, though I've heard that Firefox 3.5 does by now, I haven't tried it.

When you close an application window, the application doesn't close most of the time, just the window. Don't worry about closing the applications, you don't need to and it's means they're available faster when you want to switch back to them.

That's all I can think of for now, enjoy the new Mac, I'm jealous :)

Thanks guys - it's out of the box and I just need a nap before I set it up - GRIN!

I did buy an external hard drive to back it up - so I'll look at Time Machine - thanks for the heads up.

I bought iWork - because it was discounted at purchse and I don't use Excel and Word enough to need the MS version.

I'm pinching myself and can barely wait to see what my images look like on there - I've been on a laptop for 3 years and the editing has been a struggle at times!

I appreciate your words of wisdom.
