I would think not. It could be a bird singled out in a flock or while they're resting on a power line. You could have 10 birds standing on a power line and 1 looking straight at you or just looking in another direction from the rest. But that's just me. ;) |

I'd like to see one bird, never mind 10... I really wanted to participate in this one...but the weather has been really cold as low as -30 something and we have very few birds this time of year...I guess there is still a few hours left |

IMO it depends on the background.

Yep, me too. I finally just made the leap and picked one, probably not the right one. |

Difficult challenge to shoot as not only was the weather stinky and the light flat and boring til this afternoon, I also had to go and clone out all the little metal legbands saying 'Property of Snaffles' on them ;-) |

And to think...I got totally lucky with my shot. |

We have had crappy weather and flat light all week. I've got a couple of mid to low 5 shots. Just going to enter one and hope it doesn't tank too bad.

Just wondering . . .
Is anyone considering the "Portrait" part of the Portrait of a Wild Bird Challenge?
Or is everyone just going for a bird in the wild?
I'm not a DNMC nazi by any means, but "portrait" means something, photographically speaking. |

Ya' know, I wrestled with that issue when I was shooting. I couldn't possibly give a low score to a good flight shot (call it an environmental portrait) but I will also be looking for great "posed" looking images.
I can't wait to see them all :-) |

Robert and I were just discussing this. On one hand there is the "Portrait" part asking for head shots, but on the other hand there is the "wild" part asking for context. Dunno. If people whiff zoo shot, I think it's gonna get voted down. The easiest way to enter a zoo shot is through a portrait... |

True, but there are also a lot of bird parks that have "shows" with birds of prey flying back and forth to trainers. Shot one of those and edit out any straps or such on the talons and you have a natural looking bird in flight shot. Easy peezy |

The scoring thread is going to be a wild one I predict...or possibly this one in a continuation of "discussion" during the week. :-) |

There are also environmental portraits which don't have to be in portrait mode. I think the anal retentive among the voters will do anything they can to vote entries down. And I'm personally not going to worry to much about it.

It may be easier but I don't think you need a zoo for a portrait, just a big bird or a big lens! |

Regular portraits don't have to be in portrait orientation either. (if that's what you meant). I was just wondering if is was a consideration when shooting for this challenge. |

Well why would you "worry" about it when you've already predicted a middle of the road score for yours. ;-)

Unless you mean you're not going to worry about it while casting your votes? |

Well, so long as I don't see any sign of an enclosure or artificial light being used, I plan to vote as though the bird is in the wild. Birds in flight, great!
Main thing I am wondering about is if people are going to vote down entries that, due to the nature of the challenge, are NOT compositionally perfect. Wild critters (with the exception of that peculiar subspecies of Spanish wolf, GateJumperus Highus) don't take direction very well. |
