Bing maps has a 3D plug-in (just click '3d' at the top) which takes topography information, and maps it onto the satellite view. This allows you position yourself anywhere in the world and view a 3d representation of a scene.

I've been finding it particularly useful in identifying mountains and landmarks in landscapes and cityscapes. (I'm not an ordnance survey map-reading expert!)

Talking of bing maps, there's a lovely feature in the beta called 'photosynth' which lets you go to a location and view 3d stitched-together photos submitted by users.

Hard to explain, try it for yourself. Go here and then zoom in on a popular tourist spot, and click the green push-pins; //www.bing.com/maps/explore/
