Just got off the phone with Canon after taking advantage of their loyalty program offer of a refurbed EOS 50D, instead of repairing the 20D. For the time I had it, the 20 must have had some of that  Scalvert mojo remaining, as it brought me two high scoring freestudy entries in a row. The 50D will be in my hot little hands tomorrow.
They have jacked up the price by $40 since last month, but when I told them what I had been offered when they received my old camera, the rep went to talk to a supervisor and came back in a few minutes, having revised the price for me to the original offer.
I think the the sofa will be reasonably comfortable to sleep on for a while.

I just bought the 50D, and I must say, I think you will be suitably impressed.. I have not yet found any significant weaknesses, and the frame rate is simply killer, especially considering the 15MP's of data that have to slam down the pipe.
Edit: After re-reading your post, I noticed the bit about the couch.. I've been eating Ramen for weeks now.. They're delicious, taste like supercamera.. :)
