So my computer tells me my hard drive is about to fail - the one with all my pictures on it. Nice of it to let me know, actually! I did back up everything yesterday, so I think I'm good as far as new folders and such. But I do go back and re-edit stuff, re-work stuff, etc, as I'm sure most of us do from time to time, and I have no way of knowing if or when I backed up those edits. In other words, I back up my chronological files every couple of weeks or so. But I don't go back to the files I've already backed up.
Which leads to my question - what software tools do you use to compare folder contents? If I were to compare the folders for September 2007 on my computer versus September 2007 on my backup drive, for instance, I want to see if there are any on the computer that are NOT on the backup drive, and I want to be able to do this without opening each individual folder and reading the contents manually. Suggestions? Thanks! |

This worked very well! I like the "old school" feel of it, and it found edits I hadn't backed up and a couple of whole folders I'd missed somehow. Thanks for the link!! |

Beyond Compare is a great package because it will do compares, custom filtering, show differences, will do both a Md5 hash and straight binary comparison.
Plus, it has command line capability allowing you to write scripts (simple .bat files) to run nightly backups/compare, etc.

I came across this problem back in Aug when I started this thread, I ended up using synctoy to keep my backup drives current with my active drives.
When ever I update a current file, synctoy see's the change and updates my backup drives.

Mine failed on me without any warning over the weekend. Booted up Saturday morning and my data drive was not even detected by the bios. Fortunately, I have a recent manual backup on an external drive and most of my recent originals are still on the CF cards. I didn't lose much.

That is a good data failure. Good thing you had it all backed up.

I use synctoy also.....very good.
