Hey folks,
I have a shooting coming up tomorrow for a jazz pianist from Berlin and her jazz Trio.
The Trio photo will be used for their next album cover, and she wants some single portraits of her infront of the piano/playing the piano.
I'll bring my 140cm octagonal softbox, 250Ws Elinchrome strobe and Nikon SB24 flash that i can use offcamera and to trigger the strobe.
So do you guys have any cool lighting techniques on how to light 3 person's with 2 lights? I have something in mind but wanted to know what you guys think first.
And how do I go about lighting the piano with its highly reflective black surface?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the short notice...;-)
eta: I'll also bring a 5-in-1 reflector.

Experience speaking here. Tip - take a nice clean soft cloth to polish the piano with. Piano's have all sorts of ghastly fingerprints and greasy smears on them especially when under glancing strobe light... Circular polarizer might be worth taking along too. A little back / rim lighting from the SB24 and some hard lighting... |

what if for the picture of the pianist a strobe behind the piano causing a bunch of rim light for both the player and the piano and then a high key light through a softbox sort of like a spotlight. it might make for a very dynamic image with an almost performance-like feel.
although this doesnt have to do with lighting, for the trio you could edit it so that its all black and white except for the shiny brass of the sax/trumpet/brass instrument that the other members are playing. to add focus to the pianist she could be wearing a vivid color like red (potentially with a rose on the piano to accent the red in the clothing). i just feel like using color to accent the pianist and then the other members instruments while having everything else black and white might make for a cool effect and a unifying component as well. |

Thanks a lot guys. I kinda like the Sin City idea for the editing. The thing is, I'll be shooting mostly on film, because I want to cut short on the editing part...;-)
I don't have a polarizer, so I guess I should keep the lighting as hard as possible on the piano to avoid reflections.
On a side note, it's 7am here now and they're still having a 90's party right next door. I'm not sure if that's a good omen for the shoot.
I'll let you guys know how it went though. Thanks again. |

At least it isn't an 80's party! :)
I did a bridal shoot with a friend(1) and grand piano on stage at a local theatre building. I wasn't prepared for the blackness that swallowed up my little lights. The stagehand set up some theatrical lighting for us and it was gelled red and blue which was interesting. I don't really have any advice but the thing about the rag sounds like a great idea--the piano was crazy dusty and scuffed. too many performers dancing on top I guess! Here is one of images. I think this shot was stage lighting only.
I'd like to hear how your shoot goes. Good luck! |

Just got home from Berlin after an Odyssey of a train ride. I met a few very interesting people on the way though, like an old ukrainian granny, my best friend's brother (by accident) and some students who just came back from the G8 protests in Kopnhavn.
Anyway, the shoot went ok. I wasn't really inspired by the location (at her home), but had to make the best out of it. She's got a big lovely piano in her house and wanted me to take a few photos of her playing, thatswhy we couldn't set it up elsewhere.
So here's a few quick Elements 5 edits:
I shot 4 films on my medium format film cam, so these are still to come.
Any feedback is truly appreciated :) |
