I got this email from a friend of mine last night. I'm going to repost it here, and then go do some searching myself - hoping one of you can point me in the right direction though.
This person :
- has no vehicle or driver's licence
- will not purchase anything online
- needs this before Christmas
We're in Canada. The $500 limit is in $CDN and must include taxes.
Help, J wants an SLR camera... I really want to get him one and have come into a windfall of $500 that I can spend but so far all I am seeing is $800 and UP(to like $4000). I know you did a lot of shopping around recently-ish. Help me please? I have no idea what is good quality. He would like an SLR that would take his old Minolta lenses as well. He had a pretty fancy camera when we met and likes to take pictures, I would really like to surprise him for Christmas. Call me or e-mail me and we can set up a shopping date or something. I know it's awful short notice and everything is probably hiked because it's shopping time but I only got the money today and he tossed out the SLR camera as an idea that I am sure he doesn't think I can pull off.

Once he limits himself to not buying online, I would assume only local Canucks will be able to help him. There are Minolta/Sony cameras available that will take his older Minolta lens' and for $500 a used one online from a reputable individual would get the best bang for her buck.

Not buying online is going to really limit the options. I'd at least check the local ads like craigslist. I got my 20D from the local astronomy club website forums for a pretty decent price. Also how old are the lens? They may not fit the current digital SLR's so you'd want to check that out before deciding on a camera. |

I know you said you don't buy online, but consider this listing to show you what $500 could buy you in the used Minolta market.
FM listing
This is not my listing and I don't know the seller. But that is an amazing price on the items if they are still available.

Not all Minolta lens are 'A' mount to fit the newer cameras. They have been 'A' mount for quite awhile, but still...
Check this list and see if his old camera is on it. These would've all used 'A' mount lens (I'm pretty sure anyway).
If his old lens are NOT 'A' mount, and depending on what he has, the brand may not be a concern (i.e. - may need to just start over).
ETA - www.dyxum.com is a good community (global) that may be helpful as well.

I know nothing about the old camera.
She knows nothing about the old camera, except that the camera itself is a Minolta (not a Sony).

Sony bought out Minolta and they've continued the 'A' mount system. Do you have details on any of the old lens that he still has? That would probably identify the mount type. The website I linked earlier with the camera bodies, also has a section of 'A' mount lenses. |
