Hey all,

Looking to get some online data storage. Not backup, where they delete what you've uploaded after 30 days if it's deleted from your computer. Almost like an archival service. +4TB storage. I need a place to store my images once I'm done with them where I can get them easily if I need them for reprints, etc.

Any suggestions are great!

If you really mean >4TB storage, it's going to be damn expensive - something like Amazon's S3 comes in around $150/month/TB, and that's before you factor in bandwidth charges. At those kind of rates, a dedicated server starts to look attractive.

Another alternative (which I think was discussed here) was to buy a NAS and keep it at a friends house; the initial costs are higher (a 4TB ReadyNAS will set you back, what, $1k?) but obviously the monthly bills are lower. Although your friend's house probably isn't a secure data center!

Both carbonite & mozy ADVERTISE "unlimited"..... You could try - although remember any cloud storage is going to be slow for the storage your likely talking about. I thought about it and even with a 5Mb upload speed I have it would take weeks (maybe more) to get the first push done.

Carbonite and Mozy also both explicitly forbid "commercial" use; if you're selling any of your photography you're potentially going to be violating their TOS (although I know plenty of photographers who use them and haven't yet heard any horror stories!)

I'm not a fan of online storage, or servers in general.

Are you really gonna be accessing them that often? I doubt it. Maybe a couple 2TB externals (see WD MyBook) would work best - they're solid enough to keep next to your desktop, but you can take them along if you need them elsewhere. However, if you need them but don't realize it until you're 1000 miles away, you're kinda stuck without them. So consider getting two or more of the largest possible portable (portable = 2.5", USB-powered, e.g. WD Passport) external hard drives as well and keep either your best or your newest for quick prints on the go, and ALWAYS take it them with you.

You could always keep your computer like a server and have everything on it, and use something like GoToMyPC (or other easy-to-use VPN program) to access it from elsewhere, maybe using a netbook that you carry around while you're away. The "perfect" setup for me would be something like this:
One computer
One fast internet connection (upload at least 5 Mbps)
Two 2TB external MyBooks to leave on the desk unless you're sure you'll be accessing them, in which case you just take them with you
Two 500GB external Passports to always take with you - one as a general archive of your best stuff, one with the stuff you're working on
A VPN program like GoToMyPC
A Netbook with Photoshop with which to access and edit your files, whether they're at home or with you
