So every 6 months or so, I come back and speak up on the forums here, so here's my semi-annual question. :)

What's so great about Hasselblads, and why do I see them being used for every fashion shoot I see? Is it the 31 - 50 mp and the name? I get that, I was just wondering if there was some other major advantage, like ISO performance or something, because I don't otherwise know why they're considered the best cameras.

Thanks for any insight!

Optics. Mostly Carl Zeiss optics. Hasselblad's been famous for them for years, kind of like Leica in the 35mm camp.

Optics? I looked up Zeiss, but still don't know what's so special about his lenses. I'm sure there is something, I just don't get it. :)

Large large sensor. (medium format) So its 50 mp but not stuffed into a tiny sensor which means you get an insane amount of detail and sharpness. Also with the large sensor your depth of field can be really really shallow. (Compare the DOF of a POS and an SLR and you'll see this fairly readily).

eta: they had a 'blad at one meeting of my local camera club. To feel that camera...*drool*.

By reputation, the best lenses in the world. This may be less true now than it used to be, in the same sense that the Rolls Royce may no longer be the best car in the world, but... Long before the Japanese came on the market, the Germans owned the field of precision optics, not just for camera lenses but for scientific optics, telescopes, you name it. And among the Germans, the company founded by Carl Zeiss has the most sterling reputation.

Go to a show and shoot with one.
It is about build quality, build accuracy and the resulting quality of the work you produce in terms of sharpness, contrast, color, noise and the joy to work with it.

Even when that is not important for you, you will get an orgasm from the shutter sound.

You got to use one to understand appeal.

My last cam sony R1 i bought just because of glass. And its a damn good piece of glass, very pleasing.

it seems in early sixties pentax made collab with zeiss for lense designs, but that did not last long (few months or a year ), but there are few takumar lenses those are zeiss designs.
I am not sure if 55mm f1.8 takumar is zeiss or not but i think it is the sharpest prime i have ever tried.
