Not sure if this is the right forum for this question let me know if it should be posted elsewhere. I was under the impression with basic editing that borders or creating lines weren't allowed. It seems I've seen a number of entries that have a solid white border around them or a thin line a few cm from the border are these allowed?

You may:

*
use any feature of your camera while photographing your entry, with the exception of combining multiple captures in-camera.
*
crop, rotate and resize your entry.
*
use filters or stand-alone utilities designed to preserve image integrity (such as Neat Image, Unsharp Mask, Dust & Scratches, and color correction tools). These filters must be applied uniformly to the entire image, and must not be used in such a way that their use becomes a feature. No “effects” filters may be applied to your image, with the exception of Noise and Gaussian Blur.
*
saturate, desaturate or change the colors of your entry, but no selections are allowed.
*
use only Adjustment Layers (or their equivalent). An Adjustment Layer is a special type of layer containing no image data that lets you experiment with color and tonal adjustments without permanently modifying the pixels. Adjustment Layers must be applied in Normal mode.
*
add a border to the outside edge of your entry. Your border must be distinct and clearly recognizable as a border.

Vignettes are the no-no, borders are fine.

ANOTHER QUESTION FROM ME!

Would excessive use of the unsharp mask filter be concidered a "feature"? What do you think?

I always thought that if it was excessive, that it's not being used to preserve the image integrity -- that it's being used to create an effect.

Obivously, the thing is that it just brings everything in the image alot more.. It doesn't add an effect (the photo as it was taken is effectfull enough), it really just enhance in. Would someone care to take a look? Is that alowed?

best thing to do is submit a ticket and see if they can look at it. I can look, but I have absolutely no knowledge except my gut instinct. But if you want gut instinct...

I don't believe we've ever DQ'd someone for that. The unsharp mask is an allowed tool, and so long as it's used uniformly in an entry, there wouldn't be grounds for DQ.
