Shift == perspective distortion control. It is even easier to simulate in Photoshop than tilt is, and some raw converters can even do it without having to start up the 'shop. But, a perfect perspective corrected architectural photo will perhaps be too normal-looking to get good scores in this challenge?
Is this challenge going to be a mix of extreme artistic tilt/shift "effects" a'la lensbaby, mixed with "too perfect" architecture and product shots? :)

I don't think isolation-by-blurring, which this is, has ever been considered a "new feature" in advanced...

I don't know why I thought it was a problem - apparently it is not as Five_Seat had a perfectly acceptable free study. Carry on! |
To be honest, I was worried that I might be DQ'ed for exactly what you guys are talking about. I guess the effect is legal though... There is a chance that my entry slipped by, as some of the middle-of-the-pack ones tend to do. |

What if I take a picture of an actual miniature? Won't I be dq'd for fooling the viewer into thinking he is being fooled?

Yes it would. Any SC that would like to tell us if this is new or just a Thanksgiving gift, please do. :) |

Thanks Deb. I understand that being lifted up as an example, but it's not really an example of what would/would not pass validation as this image finished well outside the validation request range (unless requested by a voter) and if I understand it correctly, there wasn't a validation request made was there? |

My guess here is that the mask is too well defined, too discrete, such that the mask itself becomes a new "image area." The mask must be a tool to accomplish some other effect, not the effect itself. My take on it anyway... |
I guess I considered this example because if you replace the opaque selected area with gaussian blur, it's very similar in the processing task/technique. |

My guess is this challenge will be a photoshop contest - may the best "miniature" win. I'll probably put my lensbaby away for this one and take the photoshop direction myself. |

No, I did not have to get the image validated... |

Is this what they call peer pressure?! :-) Hmmm... I do have one idea that might work with the LB. :-P |

I have a feeling that the next time this one comes around there will be a note attached telling us that miniatures are not allowed.
Looks like a miniature challenge to me so the question is; do I chance a miniature or a targeted focus shot? hmmm |

i was going to post my dq that you did...however, i take the phrase "no new feature" and "no new SHAPE" to be different, and the shape is what caused this dq.... |

If you own and operate a Lensbaby, yes, there's TREMENDOUS peer pressure to put it to good use in this challenge!! :-) |

47 Lensbaby steps are equivalent to 17 grown up steps. It's a learning process. |

I think the key is what your subject is. No close ups. Things need to be done far away/wide angle. I think it will be fun, even if just for the voters. I predict many won't "get it," but those who do will give us some fun tiny eye candy. |

Note that it says "often for creation of miniature scenes" (or something to that effect) but does not limit us to miniature-like scenes. I'm afraid normal lensbaby stuff may not be appreciated here, and that will be too bad indeed. |
