I have been requested by a couple of local bands to do some photographs of them while performing and also a seperate shoot for a flyer or to use to promote on the web.
I was wondering what equiptment I should have at a minimum to do this as I only have a small budget. I was thinking along the lines of just getting a small mounted flash and diffuser, if this is what I need, what's the minimum I can spend and what should I get?
Thanks |

I'm not familiar with Canon, but I believe you can find the cheap 50mm f/1.8 which gives good reach if you stay in front of the stage. Zoom lenses with the prefered maximum aperture costs.
Depending on your cameras high noise performance and the lighing setup at the gig you probably wont need a flash while shooting the gig. ISO 1600, f/1.8 and around 1/80"-1/125" and maybe 1/60" if you have a good handholding tecnique. Shoot the concerts "still"moments. Like a ballad when everything stops and vocalist stops to catch his breath, then you won't be needing insane shutterspeeds.
shooting the band can be done with one flash, especially if you can get it off the camera, cable or something. What kind of flash can the canon guys tell you.
Shooting concerts is hard and challenging. With patience and good will you will eventually get good photos! Make friends with the sound or light guy so that you can go backstage, up to the 2nd floor shooting down etc so you can get multiple angles. |

I'd consider a 50mm 1.8 and a flash (used isn't a bad idea) as a start. That way you have a chance to maybe get some with just ambient light and then also can do some with lighting. Make sure the flash has adjustable power, and if you get a used flash, be careful of the flash voltage. Here's a list of flash voltages. If you find a flash that is higher than recommended for Canon's, you can use a Wein SafeSync to safely mount it. That's about as barebones as I can imagine. If you're looking for a decent fast zoom, I recommend the Tamron 28-75, though I've found it's autofocus pretty slow (could be my lens though). Otherwise it's great though- decent cost and very sharp, great contrast and color.
Oh yeah, there are lots of these threads, so do a search for lots of additional info.

I just saw a hardly used 50mm f/1.4 for roughly the same price as a new 50mm f/1.8 on a Norwegian site. Find out if there's a photosite that has an online marketplace for equipment. I bought my last lenses there for a very good price. |

These are my favorite threads because it gives me the opportunity to look at the Brickwaller/Douchebag Hall of Fame site, hosting the absolute worst Band photos ever...

hey i shoot local/regional bands alot and thought id add my two cents...
i either shoot with my 50mm 1.4 at f/2 ISO 1600 and i can usually manage between 1/80- 1/250 depending on the lighting situation. i also LOVE to get up to the stage with my 10-22 and a flash. sometimes i have a friend hold the flash off camera for me. once before ive actually been able to set up a light on one side of the stage. but usually i have it on camera bouncing off the ceiling ( if the ceiling is low. if it isnt i would recommend getting a light sphere for it. stage setups can be very variable. it depends on how close you can get to the band, how big the venue is, what the lighting is like, how high the ceilings are, if there is/isnt a stage. you have to assess everything. for promotional shoots for bands i use 1-2 lights off camera usually either themed or at a location... im sorry if i wasnt much help it all depends on the specifics of the situation. if you have any questions that you think i can answer, let me know. |
