I think you're getting the gist of it!
To use it without the ad-hoc feature, I just have my laptop connected to my home network. To set up the card, you stick the card in a card reader (my laptop has a built-in SD reader, but the EyeFi also comes with one) and a web-based interface will let you configure the wireless network for the card. Once the card is back in the camera, it will seek out my wireless network and find my laptop.

This network will be created by the eye-fi card, and preset to download images to a certain folder on said laptop. I am pretty sure the laptop has the built in wireless capabilities...unless I am thinking of my previous work computer. And unfortunately I think it is XP. I guess all we can do is try, right? What additional hardware are you using to work the card without the ad-hoc feature?
Thanks for the info! |

Do I need to have access to an existing wireless network, or can you use this feature in remote places with simply the card and a laptop that seeks out wireless networks? |

An ad hoc network is just a peer-to-peer connection, so no other wireless network would be necessary.

Just as an update... I finally had a practical reason to use this setup last weekend, and I was really happy with how well it worked. I had it set up so that I could shoot portraits, and while I was shooting the EyeFi would send the shots to my laptop. Once I'd finish with someone, they could go review everything on the laptop to place orders.
It would be nice if they'd download a little faster, but it wasn't so slow that people had to wait around for shots, either. |

Just as an update for my event...decided not to go with the eye-fi card just yet. Glad I didn't, as we only made about 1/2 the cash we expected. We were able to load the shots onto a laptop during dinner and could pull them up in case people wanted to see them when we opened back up afterwards. Shot a lot of formals that night before dinner and a lot more relaxed groups and couples with full bellies and empty wine glasses! Shots turned out pretty well and I got to shoot the ceremony as well. This was a celebration of the USMC's birthday with lots of tradition (cutting and serving of a birthday cake, an empty place setting for fallen Marines, color guard, etc). It was a nice evening all around, we made a little money, were able to deliver nice prints to USMC members, and secured a spot for the next 3 years for this event. I have a feeling with the responses we got from the prints, we might have a longer line next year. We heard previous years' prints were not of very high quality, and way overpriced. Hopefully we made a good impression on the Marines, the families, and friends at the event.
