I'm relatively new to college football, but this is one of the reasons I have trouble loving it. Why does Florida deserve its #1 rank? It's played a single Top 25 team all year. Sounds like a pansy school that loads up with underweight opponents. Alabama has played a beat 5 Top 25 teams. Oregon has played 5 Top 25 teams as well (although they lost two, not making any case that Oregon should be #1...)

I guess we'll find out Dec 5th at the SEC championship vs Alabama. I still think there should be a tournament of some sort. I'd really like to see how a school like Boise State, that gets held back because of the conference it plays in, would do against the big guys.

Take Utah last year. They beat Alabama, who was ranked very highly all year (top 5) Florida's gotten lucky a lot this year too... against non-ranked teams nonetheless. Granted they won, but the game should never have been that close between the #1 team and nobody cares state university.

The people in charge of the poll rankings are the same folks who handled the election in 2000.

They didn't load up on underweight schools, if you take a look at their opponents there are some perennial strong teams on their schedule such as Florida State(big Rivalry) , Miss St, S.Carolina, LSU, Georgia, Tenn and even Arkansas. It's not their fault that these teams have been a bit below their usual performance level. Most are in their conference and they don't have a say anyway which leads me to one reason they are ranked as high as they are is the fact they play in the best conference in C.football right now. Throw in the fact that they have won the National Championship two of the last three years and have the same QB as those winning teams and I can see why they are ranked as high as they are. IMO, the Crimson Tide are # 1 right now but it is all academic since they will play each other soon enough and we will find out who really is the # 1 team and inevitably will end up being the national champion.

ETA:
For the record, I'm a Notre Dame fan(don't go there) and my father in law played for Florida State so I have no special place in my heart for the Gators, just stating why I feel they are ranked where they are.

thanks =) We really had them close, very much could have beat if not for BS calls by shady refs. *stepping off my soapbox now*
Glad at least one person out there considers Miss State a good team.

How can Florida play for the "best conference in football right now" when you just listed six teams in the conference who are playing "a bit below their usual performance level"? ;P

They really need to get rid of the coaches poll. They don't watch the games sans the teams on their schedule so they ar the least qualified to vote.

Six teams from the SEC that are playing a bit below their normal level are still much tougher than almost any six teams from any other conference. This conference beats the hell out of each other year after year after year. Don't get me wrong, I am no Florida fan. However, if you can remain undefeated, or even with one loss, in the SEC, the program is normally a powerhouse.

I would argue that Alabama should be no1 but, Good News, they will have to play each other. It could be the real National Championship Game. If a team gets ranked number 1 early and they don't lose its hard for another team to out rank them, even if they were to appear to be much better. Thats just how the voting system works. (A playoff system would just devalue the regular season games. Besides, noone really cares who is the best at the end of the year.)

Trivia time:

What school had the first team to be ranked #1 wire-to-wire, meaning being preseason ranked #1 and finishing the season #1 (without dropping out of that position all year)? And what year was it?

1999 Florida State Seminoles

More trivia: The Heisman-winning quarterback from that team, Chris Weinke, holds the NFL record for most consecutive losses (14), and has a career record of 2-18 as a starting quarterback. The team that lost to the Seminoles in the 1999 Sugar Bowl (Virginia Tech) had Michael Vick at quarterback.

Who invented the Green Bay Packers' "Lambeau Leap", and what university did he attend?

Are all your trivia answers going to be Florida State?

Possibly.

More trivia? . . . Who is the first and only NFL rookie to score three touchdowns in one playoff game, and what university did he attend?

1Florida 13
2Alabama 32

Well, can't say I didn't see that coming despite 46 AP pollsters picking Florida #1 the week prior to the game. Like I said, their schedule was a joke.

I thought that game might be the real national championship game but I dont' think so now. The real question is who should be #2? Texas? I supose they earned their way in by winning the Big 12. But after failing to hammer the Huskers it looks like they could lose hard to Alabama. Its really more about matchups so who knows. The Huskers have a serious defense. Let me be the first to put it out there.

Tx- 10
AL- 35

If that happins to be close I would like to see TX vs FL for #2. :) I guess a couple of other teams might deserve to be in that game too though.
