I doubt high-end dSLRs will be marked down for Black Friday. They sell just fine at full price. Might get a "leader" deal on a lower-end starter kit somewhere, but they will only have five at that price and will not be issuing rain checks. :-)

What the heck is Black Friday? Sounds like something linked to the end of the world!

Sara, Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving and is the day when the retail industry in the States goes insane. Huge, huge discounts available on white goods and other high ticket items. Stores open at ridiculous hours in the morning and some folk queue all night to be first in line to get the deals. The discounts can be enormous, but usually there are only limited numbers, eg first 100 customers. It is the busiest shopping day of the year in the US and kicks off the Christmas shopping season really. I always preferred to stay indoors on this day when I was living there! It's crazy beyond belief.

To add to what salmiakki said, It is the most dangerous shopping day in the US also. More accidents happen at stores on Black Friday then all days total the rest of the year. People get trampled when they open the doors at the stores. People fight over items. Lines at the doors and checkout lanes become unruley, I have seen it first hand and like salmiakki, I usually would choose to avoid shopping centers on this day, Now I am not in the states I can shop next Friday without all the hassles.

Hi Sara, in Brit terms, imagine the Harrods sale and the hype that goes with it (as well as the Next sale they have just after Xmas), then multiply that by at least a thousand, add in some typical consumerist violence, crushing, punching, crying. Add to a big bowl, let the media stir it up as much as possible and there you have it..

Sounds like great fun!

God bless capitalism!

My sister is an excellent shopper - she can find the best deals on anything! She very carefully maps out where she wants to go and when on Black Friday, then takes her imposing husband with her to run interference when needed. This is the guy:

LOL! Never again, huh? I don't know that I've ever really *done* Black Friday. I did go once looking for a deal advertised but it was long gone by the time I got there, so I gave up, got a mocha from Starbucks, went back home.

LOL!!! Dude, you crack me up. :-) And Steve, I really am trying to cut back. Have to, seeing as how I'm unemployed in a week....

I keep forgetting to get my vendors license before black friday - these people are all freezing cold standing in line and would pay $10 for a cup of coffee.

My husband went out once to do it... we saw the lines and decided to go have breakfast instead. It was odd, at 5:30am, we had a hard time finding a breakfast place open. It was either last year or the year before that a man was killed at my local Walmart on Black Friday. It was stupid crazy. I usually hide out and stay at home until the 2nd or 3rd week of January to avoid the madness.

Ditto! I waited in line all night at a Wal-mart for a doll for my daughter that was impossible to find (of course this was many years ago). I was second in line in the store and guess what? They were sold out. Never again!

I used to drive public transportation and it was always fun to drive around town and see the lines at places on Black Friday. I never go near any of these places if I can help it.

There is no power on Earth that will get me into or near a shopping area on Black Friday. While they all head for the center of town, I'm heading for the sticks!

On the other hand, for Cyber Monday, I may be online trying my luck on the deals - but since I can do that from the isolation of my living room, it's not so bad.

I worked four black fridays when I was a Wal-Mart employee (I still get random facial ticks from the memories). I refuse to go near a store (other than grocery) from the Monday before thanksgiving to the day after New Years. My christmas shopping was done a month and a half ago. No HDTV is worth risking my life.

Wallmart is exactly where I will go if there is a street challenge running on Black Friday. But I will only stay outside in my car..

Yup, me too. About 4 years ago, i think. Now i tend to have my shopping done by the end of October, primarily doing it online. I don't find the "sales prices" combined with the lack of availability to be worth getting up at that hour, not to mention the hassle of dealing with 5000+ deal incensed shoppers.

it's one of Steely Dans more popular songs...
