some cultures are still allowed to hunt whales for traditional purposes. Or something along those lines. Not everyone can just go get them a whale. It is very closely monitored and regulated.

I´m from Iceland as is this picture. And the whale quata is full. But sometime when the fishermen are fishing cod or other fishes then whales, seals and other seacreaturs accedently swim in the net. When that happens the usely dies and then is nothing other to do but keep it.
The best person to answear you is Eikidigi. |

I think that it is a male whale...............
You might want to consult an expert though, I am not well-versed in cetacean gender determination.

EirÃkur, Norwhales are still hunted in northern Iceland are they not? I read somewhere that 80% of your food comes from the sea, is this true? It's hard to graze cattle and sheep on an icefield! |

actually, iceland is not very "icy" at all, while greenland is jut the opposite. it was a trick to keep people from invading or something.
being from an island province with the fishery as a primary resource, i can say that 80% of our food does not come from the sea. it pretty much all comes from the grocery store as imports from everywhere else. we eat fruits and vegetables and frozen pizzas and chicken breasts, etc, just like most everyone else - save for our vegetarian and veagan friends. most of what is caught here is exported. i would venture the same holds true for iceland.

When I visited Iceland a while back, I had some of the best and freshest fish I've ever enjoyed. But, er, no whale, thanks anyhow. You Icelanders have a beautiful country with all those waterfalls and geysers. |
