Got the repair estimate from Canon on my 20D. They say it needs the shutter replaced. I have the same upgrade offer from them that some others have received.

-Repair my 20D for $252 (US) (Can afford this)
-Get a refurb Rebel XS for $359 (Stretching a bit more, but can still afford this option)Would have to replace memory cards and batteries)
-EOS50D for $629. (Seriously tempted but it's stretching the near future budget and I can't really justify the expenditure.)(can use existing memory cards and batteries)

Any opinions or suggestions?

Fix the 20D or go for the 50D. Pass on the XS.

The 50D is also a refurb.

Op for the 50D if you can stretch and part with 6 bills...
or fix the 20D if you were happy with the 20D features/performance etc. (Probably the most reasonable thing to do.)

Does Nikon do this????

I could send my D70s back and maybe get a deal on a D300, right?

I just spoke to them and I can take a month to make up my mind, so that gives me time to scrounge up the $$ for the 50D. In the meantime, my S5 IS will be happy to get regular usage again.

Thanks for the input and I agree, the better choices were fix the 20 or spring for the 50.

Jeb, you can call 'em and ask, I suppose.

I was never happy with my 20D. I would go for the 50. (Do they have a 40D refurb option? Even though I had a problem with my 40D, I still love it. Might be a cheaper option if you can talk them into it.)

No offer of a 40D, or I would probably take them up on that.

Canon is offering refurbed 50D's for $629?

How can I get in on that?

By having a broken earlier model that you send to them for repair. Once they had my 20D and I checked the repair center status, the offer was on the web page. I have *heard* (not sure though) that you may also be able to just call up their customer loyalty program and get the deal. Not sure what the qualifying criteria is, however.
