I'd like to see this implemented actually. It'd be a bit of a pain but I sometimes wonder how many people have shots that don't make the top 5 that would be DQ'd on a basic check of EXIF data but they are never validated. It happens fairly often in the top 5 and if all entries had a review of EXIF data on all entries then we may see a few more be tossed out. |
And who's going to check all 150-200+ files for valid info? SC is on board as volunteers...I don't see them having the time (or desire) to do this. I also think the extra overhead to upload hundreds of originals to DPC isn't really a good thing. |
It could be automated in many cases. That wouldn't catch the people who have modified their data but it would identify originals with
a) dates outside the range
b) modifications by software where the user thought they had the original |
Yeah. Good point on the automation. Considered that, and it has potential, but I still think the extra overhead is an unneeded burden. JMO of course. :-) |

actually, there are few points about uploading originals.
1. Its going to be little harsh on photographers because once original is uploaded no other 'original' would be asked. If photographer uploaded wrong by mistake, its photog fault and have to deal with it. So in OP's case it will be DQ without any appeal.
(But this will save lot of time for SC, because they will not be debating about validatign entries many times)
2. If the originals are stored only for few days or day month or so, then memory would not be any issue. SC should keep their right to ask for original after too, as they can ask now.
3. From exif lot of batch checks could be done, like date validity and all. If someone does not have valid original, he would not be participating. Currently only few entries get validated.
4. If someone questions any entry during voting, a quick validity check could be made.
In all, this would help SC a lot, because in this case:
1. They will not be waiting 2 days for anything to validate.
2. They will not be validating entry few times, as in OP case they have to do it two time. Plus it is problem for both ends, now user has to seach originals and upload. (when you participate that time it is very likely you have original too around the corner).
3. Once decision is taken, based on uploaded original, it will be rigid and not open to posts that say SC's ruling was subjective.

Time to break out the forensics software.
hxxp://www.imagemetry.com/imagemetry_forensics.pdf
Process and Procedures should be followed by any serious or hobbiest photographer if they want to 'compete' in challenges like the ones offered by DPC.
1 - Create a folder with the current DATE
2 - Backup your original files to a sub-folder called ORIG.
3 - Copy the files you are going to work on and possibly submit to a sub-folder called WIP.
4 - Copy the final version to a sub-folder called SUBMITTED.
If there are any issues, you have the entire process at various stages ready to submit for reivew if requested.
Hope that helped! |

I'm sure there could be a process of communication that would allow the photographer to upload a new original if they made an error and uploaded the wrong one. |

We already do that, but sometimes there's no response from the photographer. |

Sure, and you can't do much about it if they don't reply. I was answering zxaar's point where he mentioned that if we required originals at submission time then there was no scope to argue an automatic fail. |

Thank you DPC and all who helped me out with this dilemma! The challenge results have been changed. Now I have one of my favourite pics on my profile.
Thanks again for your support and understanding! |
