I am hoping in sheer desperation that somebody may be able to help me. A friend brought an external hard drive to my place so that i could print out some very important photos. When I plugged the drive into my imac it asked whether I wanted to use it as a time machine backup - unfortunately this was selected as yes and hence erased all the files on the drive.

I have had a computer person recover the files and we can see them but can not open them in photoshop, does anybody have any ideas of what I can try to resolve this issue.

Unfortunately these files have not been saved anywhere else in their worked state.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ouch! When you say you can see them, but not open them, we need more details. See them where? See them how? What kind of files are they— EOS 1D RAW? How were they recovered? The more details you can provide, the more likely someone will be able to help.

The computer man ran a recovery program (sorry i don't know which one) and you can see all the files just as if were running normally. They all have how many mb they are etc. The files appear as my friend saved them. For example a file has been saved as "final IMG8278-2.tiff" but when I try to open it in photoshop I get the message "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document".

The important ones to open have been saved as either a PSD or tiff file.

It could be that the software he ran was a demo and is only previewing the files it found. It could also be that the recovered files are corrupted, incomplete or mislabeled. If you have access to the drive, I would run data recovery software on it yourself so at least you know what you're dealing with. If you don't already have software (it comes with some media cards for free), I would take a look at Lexar Image Rescue or Sandisk RescuePro.

If possible, you need to make a copy of them in a new file on your hard drive in your iMac before doing very much more to try to get them off the external HD.

Thank you for these ideas - I will give them a go. I do have Sandisk RescuePro but only thought that this worked on compact flash cards not hard drives. The data is lost, so I can only give it a go and see what happens.
