I use the alienbees system of strobes... I have 5 strobes and the old Paul Buff trigger/remote system... it's really anchient, but works great! the only annoying thing is that it's a crummy frequency, so half the time it keeps getting triggered randomly, which can be VERY annoying...
Paul buff (Alienbees) is offering a $40 credit on each unit returned towards their new system of triggers/recievers
Paul Buff / Alienbees triggers
I like their old and new ones because the recievers don't need batteries as they run off of the power for the strobes...
The new ones are $90... so should come to $50 each after trade in... but i'm in canada, so shipping/brokerage is killer... so they'll probably cost me like $80=$100 each by the time I get them..
Has anybody tried them before? are they any good? I was looking at pocket wizzards, but I need 1 trigger and 5 recievers... there is no way I can afford 6 pocket wizzards...
Let me know if anyone knows anything about these new Paul Buff / Alien bees triggers or has any other suggestions,
Thanks

I just recently bought them (non-plus versions) and they work great. I wish I bought them earlier. The only issue I have is there's no on/off switch for the battery versions, so I have to take out the batteries when I'm done with them. Of course this isn't a problem with the wired version for the ABs.

Nice!
I think i'll order them in tomorrow...
I'll probably get 2 wired ones and 3 battery ones so that I can use them with regular flashes as well...
Thanks!

I bought the transmitter and 4 receivers. They work great. No misfire! I have the battery ones and yanko mentioned that he has to take the batteries out, well theres no need it has an automatic shut off after a certain time to save your batteries from burning out.
1 AB transmitter + 4 receivers = 2 PW2's
Easy decision for me.
I think you will like them.

| Been using 1 AB trigger plus 2 recievers since start of this year. Zero problems so far. They just work and are cheap. Only thing i dont like is the no on/off switch. I use lithium AA's in the recievers and hope they dont leak if i forget to take them out. Which is mostly. |

I thought that would be the case but I've yet to see one go off after I've packed them so I've been removing the batteries. Perhaps the button is getting pressed accidentally in the bags or something.

Ya I think they shut off 1 hour after the last flash. |

I think you are right. Same problem I had/have--i think I packaged them with to tightly and the buttons were depressed, keeping them switch on until the batteries ran down. I'm trying to pack them more loosely now...I'd rather not remove the batteries(even thought it is easy). I have the standard version CSRb's. They work great!
I had the same problem with the battery on my transmitter. It is rated for over 50hrs but I know I did'nt get more than about 10-15 on the first battery. |

| I traded the old ones in for the new ones last fall, and I'm very glad I did. The old ones drove me nuts with the random firings... the new ones have been completely reliable. |

cybersyncs are awesome things and so much cheaper than PWs. Mine have never misfired and work through walls, outdoors over silly distances and generally everywhere where my Cactus things wouldn't.
Only thing I would do though is that if you plan on using these with flashes (speedlites etc) then you might want to gaffer tape the sync cable in, as well as the receiver onto the actual flash itself. I say this because I did a shoot with a flash and I was hand holding it and moving it around and the weight of the receiver would pull it out of the flash unit. |

Very useful advice. Can't tell how many times mine hit the floor. Definitely find a way to secure those suckers. |

I had to hold mine all day, which really pissed me off. especially when you're trying to use a zoom! Gaffer tape to the rescue yet again!
I know you can get some stuff from Flash Zebra that secures cords to a flash but gaffer tape is cheap, everywhere and better than sellotape cos it doesn't leave residue.
Hurrah. |

The ball bungees work for this as well. |

I bought a pack of 4 ball bungee's and that is how I hold mine onto my flashes. Work great and a whole lot cheaper then gaffers tape, even though I keep a roll in my camera bag.

| Love the cybersyncs. And the battery ones for speedlights work great--I use regular ol blue painter's tape instead of gaffer's tape: holds well, residue free, and cheap. I have no idea what "ball bungeess" are.... |

| are they tight enough to hold the sync cable in place? |

| i use strips of Velcro to hold the receiver to the flash. Ball bungees work well to fasten the whole assembly to a tree, door handle, whatever. I haven't tried to use bungees to hold the unit to the flash. I like the gaffer tape idea to hold the cable in place. I'd also like to have a cable that is about 3" long instead of 12. |

| i use velcro on mine as well and it works great also i agree that the cord is way too long i just tie mine off and actually put the tied off loop around my light stand so that if someone were to pull on it it wouldnt potentially damage the flashes pc socket. i love mine and dont regret getting them for a second. alienbee just seems like a great company to me. |
