Went to a WWII reenactment today. Got to photograph this event from inside the event, assigned to a "combat unit". That was pretty cool. Got most of the way through the day and then partway through photographing the USO show in the evening, the shutter on my 20D starts repeatedly actuating on it's own, with the infamous error 99 displaying. Even with the camera turned off, it fires. On the positive side, it didn't seem to touch the CF card and all my photos are fine. I guess I'll be sending this off to Canon to see what they can do for me.

Ok, that's off my chest now. Thanks.

That's a bummer when your main shooter goes it's own way. Have you tried a full reset?

I pulled the backup battery for a few minutes. No change.

Eh? I didn't know they were reenacting WWII. And here I am in Japan....

Typical shutter failure, about $250 through Canon. Although a used 20D is going for about the same amount. Touch call. Maybe it is time for an upgrade huh?

the worrying part is so many people complaining about canon cam failures. Not good sign.

Now you've done it! You said it out loud.

Pentaxes will now start grinding to a halt right & left!

That will only happen if, Dare I say it, Canon ever buys them out. :0

ROFL you realize you are talking about a Camera that is many generations old and possibly 5 or more years old with untold amount of shutter clicks right? It never amazes me the amount of people with another brand willing to trash another brand when given a chance.

I did realize that was a chance with buying a well used camera. No fault of anyone's. It was sold in good faith. If $250 or so is what a shutter fix costs, I think that is a better deal than buying another used camera that would be an unknown. Perhaps Canon will offer me one of those fantastic upgrade deals on a 40D or 50D. Thanks for the info.

I hope you realize the quote you posted was not towards you right? It was towards the comment about Canon Cameras made by the other poster.

Yes, I realized that, just felt the need to add my 2 cents to your response, especially since the camera was bought from another DPC member.

Have you tried putting another lens on the camera and do you still get Error 99. When I had my Error 99 incident, it wasn't the camera, it was lens -- something to do with the contacts.

P.S. FWIW, my 20D is going strong. I have no idea how many shots I have on it. The reason I don't use it much anymore is because the 40D has such a good self-cleaning sensor function.

I did think of that. I took the lens off completely and it was still firing. Even with the camera turned off the shutter would actuate a few times as soon as I put the battery in.

Was it recently purchased? Perhaps a talk with the seller and they might offer to help with the repair. If you decide not to repair it let me know. I have a project I want to do with an old broken DSLR. And will offer you a bit of $$$ for it.

i am not trashing it, merely stating the truth. Look at last five years and tell me which camera brand has most failures. Canon cams suddenly stop working is a problem too often reported.

I dunno why would i trash canon and why not nikon or any other brand. I was just stating my observations.

:-D nice try. History not repeating this time.

A widespread defect with Sony sensors around 2005 caused many P&S cameras to fail (including one of mine). It was the biggest failure in digital camera manufacturing by far.

Sheesh. Are we having a Canon/Nikon war again?

This should help.

i think canon should put a note in manual, something like this -

In case your camera working fine after 5 years of use - you lucky S O B.

/// jus joking
